No, I'm not talking about Gareth Bale. Plenty has been said about Bale trotting off to Madrid to become the next Christiano Ronaldo. I'm talking about Spurs manager and tactician André Villas Boas. The young Portuguese coach studied at the feet of Jose Mourinho, and is not far removed from the treble he won with Porto.
The situation at San Bernabéu is not looking good for Mourinho. Rumors of player rebellions and clubhouse problems have quickly soured the Special One's tenure. With club icons like Iker Casillas against the manager things are not looking good for Mou.
After having a coach with such a big ego and personality I think Madrid are going to want someone less aggressive and confrontational as Mourinho. Here's where AVB comes in. AVB has an incredible knowledge of tactics and has his teams play a similar, counter-attacking style that Mourinho's teams play. However they handle media and man management in drastically different ways. AVB is much more honest and up front about handling the media. He'll never call out a player publicly, and he'll tell the journalists exactly what he thought about the game.
I think this is something Madrid would want. They've had Mou for a few years now, and I'm sure they'd like to continue his swashbuckling, attacking style. Who better to maintain this than AVB? They've had their fill of Mourinho, and now they want someone with a bit less bark. AVB's proved his worth in the Premier League this season, taking a team that lost it's two best players and maintaining the position they finished last season. Provided he sees this season out in the top four, I think Madrid would be very interested.
But in the end, would AVB want to go to Madrid? As fans, we'd love to think he is loyal to the club and would stay, but as we saw with Redknapp, that isn't always the case. Personally I think AVB would stay with us. I think he probably feels somewhat indebted to the club that gave him his second chance. I also think he wants to build something at Tottenham. He wants to implement his vision and I think after Chelsea he realizes that is very difficult to do at such an established club. Anyway let me know what you think about Madrid wanting AVB. Am I barmy?
