Holtby insurance a must

If you're a Spurs fan, the following scenario just might be familiar to you. You're lying asleep, dreaming of our 2014 Champions League semi-final against Barcelona, when suddenly you snap awake, with an awful nightmare having invaded in your warm fuzzies.

"NOOOOOOOO. NOT THE MOOSE," you scream.

For as good as things might look, we all know that an injury to Mousa Dembele brings everything crashing down around us.

That's why it's imperative that we take the opportunity to bring in Lewis Holtby now. Media reports have Schalke asking for under 2 million to take the blonde mid-fielder off their hands right now. It would seem unlikely that Daniel Levy would in ordinary circumstance, consider such a move. He's got his man on a free, and to be truthful if everyone stays fit and uninjured we don't need Holtby this year, given we can't even fit Parker or Gylfi into our side right now.

However, as has already been shown this year, if Dembele goes down, so do we. With Champions League again tantalisingly close, it would seem foolish to have all our chips in the "Moose goes uninjured" square. Holtby will probably contest the ten position in our squad or a more forward mid-fielder in a 4-3-3 but he's got the versatility to cover Dembele if that is needed., having played plenty of central midfield for Schalke.

The fact that he can also cover support striker or even left wing, makes him a pretty bloody fantastic insurance policy.

Now, I do realise we're in a slightly different position with Parker being available now, which we didn't have when we went through our last Moose-less flatspot, but I'm not convinced two defensive mid-fielders will suit us even if they are of the quality of Sandro and Parker.

When you consider what Champions League is going to be worth to the club if we make it, bringing in Holtby immediately would seem a prudent move, regardless of how, or even if, he ends up being deployed.
