We have an interesting report from the Daily Mail via our pals at 7500 To Holte. Apparently new Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert is interested in bringing in Tottenham Hotspur left back/winger Danny Rose in for a full-season loan. Rose, 22, missed Spurs' preseason as he played with Team GB in the Olympics.
Loaning out Rose for a full-season Premiership loan makes a lot of sense for Tottenham. Minutes have been hard for Rose to find at White Hart Lane, and this upcoming season seems no different. Gareth Bale and Benoit Assou-Ekotto are clearly entrenched at starters in the left sided positions. Andros Townsend's strong preseason has him the number one contender to back up at left wing, and a platoon of Kyle Naughton, Adam Smith, Jan Vertonghen and Sebastien Bassong are all capable of providing cover at left back.
Rose's fit at Villa would be interesting. Charles N'Zogbia started off last season as Villa's clear starter at left wing, but found more minutes at right wing and striker as the season ended. In his stead at left wing, traditional left back Stephen Warnock filled in, with mediocre success at best. Eric Lichaj became first choice left back, but with Alan Hutton on the outs with Villa for this upcoming season the American should move back to his favored right. Lichaj will likely compete with new arrival Matt Lowton for minutes.
So what does all of this mean? The spot isn't clear, but there are minutes on the left for Danny Rose to get consistent minutes. Lambert seems likely to feel that Rose can both push Warnock at left back and prove himself capable enough at left midfield that the versatile N'Zogbia can fill different holes on the team. This move is far from certain, but after the way Lambert helped develop Kyle Naughton on-loan last season, there certainly seems to be opportunity in Rose going on loan with the Villains.
