I wanted to share a link with you chaps that I recently saw and found interesting from a site that in general has some nice articles on the thinking side of football, namely tactics.

Now the article was actually written before the appointment of AVB, but it deals with some theoreticals about his style of play that may help those who haven't had a chance to watch the pre-season games that have happened so far or those who are new to the game as a whole. The other decent article is about Brendan Rogers style of play and his creation of zones across the pitch, something that was a new concept to myself.

Another point he made was about Defoe fitting into the system like Falcao did at Porto. I can see some worth in this. Now...wait...I'm not for one moment saying that we don't need another forward because we quite obviously do, but Defoe has come on a lot in the last year, learning to be involved in the build-up play of the team more. This coupled with the fact that, if the team is playing the ideal fashion, we will be camped within the opposition's half. Get the ball to Defoe and he will shoot, he will often score. I always felt that last season we spent a lot of time in no-means land, the defence taking a deeper line, Mpdric and Parker exchanging a lot of passes, keeping possession yes but never making inroads to working the ball up the pitch. After five minutes, the players would become frustrated and inevitably someone would punt it long.

At times we looked like one of the best in the league at retaining possession, my hope is that AVB can use this foundation and give us purpose along with it.
