Tottenham Hotspur's central defense took a huge blow this morning as Younes Kaboul Announced on Twitter this morning that he would be out for 4 months following surgery on his injured knee. Update: Here's the news item from Tottenham's official site. It's super informative.
Well, I guess we should call of that sale of Michael Dawson, right? In all seriousness, this is horrible news both for Kaboul and Tottenham Hotspur. The big defender cemented himself as Tottenham's best defender last year and it was hoped that the combination of Kaboul and Jan Vertonghen in the center of Tottenham's defense would provide Andre Villas-Boas with the perfect central defensive pairing that he needed to run his high defensive line.Steven Caulker stands to benefit from this as he is now the fourth defender instead of the fifth. With a lot of games coming over the next four months it seems likely that we will see a pairing of Michael Dawson and Caulker in the Europa League and Capital One Cup matches. This could also mean that Tom Huddlestone sticks around as further cover at the back.
For now, it seems likely that we will continue to see the defensive pairing of Vertonghen and William Gallas for league games. If you watched their collective performance again West Brom this may be a bit worrying. Both are much more finesse defenders who lack the sheer strength and power of Kaboul. Also, the inability of Gallas and Dawson to stay consistently healthy could prove problematic for Spurs going forward.
This is really not good news for Spurs chances this season. However, there is time left in the transfer window to procure a signing on loan or on a permanent deal. This news almost makes me wish we hadn't sold Sebastien Bassong.
