This won't take long. All summer we have been fed one lie after another. Yes, it's the same every year. Yes I'm a grown adult and should know better. To some extent I do, that extent being that I believe a signing is happening when I see the player wearing the lilywhite, posing for happy snaps with the manager / chairman / tea lady at the training ground. This year though I got sucked in by the cruellest of rumours, one that gave me great optimism for the future of the club, a bright new dawn, a chance to compete with the big boys.
I fell for the stories circulating that we had a massive injection of cash coming into the club, that some Qatari or other stupidly rich investment vehicle had bought a large stake, and that Levy was going to be able to make a few star signings, the ones that would propel us to a slightly higher level, a level where we might be able to compete at least for the Premier League title.
Hell, even the press were talking about a war chest of varying sizes.
I wasn't expecting a £200m crazy spendathon, just enough to maybe sign a couple of decent strikers, one quality midfielder and maybe a younger sweeper style keeper to allow us to play a high line without risk of being exposed too regularly at the back. None of these players was going to be an intercontinental megastar, just one better suited to the style of play that I believe Andre Villas-Boas wants us to utilise. Oh and someone decent to put away the hatfuls of chances we squandered last time around.
But no. Pretty much none of this has happened. We clearly don't have money to splash around, and the chairman is running the club in his usual prudent, not to be rushed into anything way which, let's face it, has served us pretty well in the last few seasons. We wait with baited breath to see what will happen with the Modric money (if it comes soon enough), will there be a late flurry of activity, will Adebayor stop seeming such a pedant and realise playing football is a good thing, will we be gazumped by Southampton for Damiao, will we sign Stephen Fletcher on the crazed last day of the window??? Who knows.
I have to ask myself... Did I actually allow myself to become so easily led astray by the potential of Spurs playing real life fantasy football? After so many years of tutting at the likes of Chelsea and City, did I become a magpie, wanting all the shiny things that were there just asking to be TAKEN? Did I become a hypocrite?
I think I did, just for a few weeks, and for that I feel a little bit dirty. But, possibly worse, I enjoyed it just a little bit. COYS!
