Tottenham Hotspur are heading back to England with a win in the bag. Despite their very noticeable lack of center forwards, they managed to figure out a way to score two goals in a 2-1 win over New York Red Bulls.
Gareth Bale has been wearing No. 9 during this tour much to the dismay of everyone ever, and Andre Villas-Boas decided to step up his troll game by playing the Spurs left winger as a center forward so that he could live up to his number. He didn't exactly play the role like a center forward does, or even like a proper false nine. It was kind of FRAABish.
Red Bulls scored the game's opening goal when Jan Vertonghen shoved down Tim Cahill in the box early in the first half, and the referee correctly gave a penalty. For some odd reason, Kenny Cooper was the man chosen to take the spot kick and he converted.
Spurs looked like a mess for the entirety of the first half and made some changes to start the second half that led to vastly improved play. They opened their account on the 59th minute, when Bale got on the end of a corner kick and powered a header past Bill Gaudette, equalizing the match at 1-1. Five minutes later, Gylfi Sigurdsson weaved through traffic and cut back onto his right foot before curling a stunner into the back of the net, scoring the final game of the goal and giving Tottenham the 2-1 victory.
Sigurdsson and Bale were both very lively outside of their goals and look like they're ready to play Premier League football right now. Aaron Lennon had a bit of an off game by his standards, while Tom Huddlestone understandably looked like a guy who's had a year-long layoff from football. Verthongen's penalty was very disappointing, but his performance for the rest of the game was flawless.
Note: I've been sitting on this horribly uncomfortable chair all day, so I decided to write this lying down on my stomach, because my ass hurts. Writing like this is hard.
