A couple of days ago, we alerted everyone to reports out of France that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in buying Olympique Lyonnais goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, and that they were going to negotiate the transfer with Lyon. That rumor may be bogus or negotiations could still be forthcoming, but in any event, Lyon say that Tottenham have not yet made an offer.
If Tottenham rake in a huge chunk of change for Luka Modric well above and beyond what they're going to pay for a new passer in midfield (more in that on the site in a bit), it makes sense that they would want to go out and get a proven commodity at goalkeeper, and not just a prospect to potentially replace Brad Friedel. Lloris is arguably the best keeper in the world 25-years-old or younger (some say Neuer, I think Lloris is more consistent), and he'd be a great pickup for the club.
ESPN printed some quotes from Brad Friedel in their Lloris story that's linked above, and they're further evidence that Brad Friedel is awesome. He says he'll welcome another top keeper at the club, even if it means he's no longer No. 1.
"We will welcome any good addition to the squad. When I first signed here, there was no secret Tottenham would one day need a new long-term goalkeeper. I am 41 - this could be my final season. I will do whatever asked of me, whether that is No. 1, two or three, and will do it to the best of my ability. When you get older, it is easier to realise this is a team sport and the egos have to take a back seat if you want to be successful."
Lyon's chairman said previously that Lloris would be staying put if no bids were received by this Monday -- four days ago -- but he could obviously be bluffing. Whether or not the Lloris transfer is realistic, I expect Spurs to purchase a keeper this window. Just don't ask me whether that keeper is going to be an established guy or a prospect, because I don't know.
