How do you solve a problem like Modric?

Stay connected for news and updates

I watched part of the Bayern Munich - Netherlands friendly that took place on Tuesday and, apart from it being an entertaining match and creating some unexpected DRAMA with the Bayern fans booing Robben (what were they thinking?!?), there was something else I noticed that got me thinking about Spurs and their Modric dilemma.

Van Der Vaart was slotted in as a deep-lying playmaker (do we say "in the 2"?) in Netherland's 4-2-3-1 formation, instead of his usual supporting striker role he plays for Spurs. This, of course, is Modric's position. I'm curious to hear what people's feelings are about Van Der Vaart taking over this position if Modric leaves this summer.

From the little bit I saw, Van Der Vaart looked comfortable in the position, even contributing an assist with a brilliant through ball to Narsingh for their second goal (and indirectly assisting the first goal by supplying Kuyt who assisted Huntelaar). I imagine the fear is that this would make us too weak defensively, as Van Der Vaart is not one to take his defensive duties quite as seriously as Modric, though it would undoubtedly lead to more goals contributed from that position. It could also be the case that Van Der Vaart doesn't mind playing that position for his national team, but would still want to be the supporting striker for Spurs. Or maybe it's a position he could become accustomed to with a little bit more experience there?

We'll have to wait to see if he continues to play as a deep-lying playmaker for the Netherlands at the Euros, but it could be an interesting development worthy of our attention this offseason.

Whatever your thoughts, I'm curious to hear them.
