I just fanshotted the BBC article as you posted this.

With Capello quit and Redknapp cleared, I have an uneasy feeling that Tottenham may be looking for a new manager soon.

At least in our worst case scenario...

the FA will have to make a contribution to the “Bring Leandro Damiao to White Hart Lane” fund.

So the question for us becomes

should Harry leave, will Levy let Bond and Jordan manage the rest of the season, or does he appoint a new permanent manager ASAP?

I would hope that's a possibility.

And if it is, I’m hopeful something like that can be worked out. Are there any conflicts that would affect Tottenham’s season though? Or would the FA be worried about a conflict of interest with Harry’s team selections?

by Jellyfeast on Feb 8, 2012 7:46 PM GMT up reply actions

major conflict of interest. Do you risk leaving DeFoe or King of your England team sheet if it will impact their playing for Spurs? Does having a national training close to a Premier league game open you up to accusations of purposefully overworking the opposing team’s stars?

by rubbercarp on Feb 8, 2012 7:48 PM GMT up reply actions

That does not sound like a recipe for success

Who would be second choice, should Harry turn them down? Brendan Rogers?Just let Pearce handle things through the Euros?

Quotes from Capello. Really can't disagree with him here, even if I think Terry is horrible

“They really insulted me and damaged my authority. What really hit me and forced me to take this decision was the fact the much-vaunted Anglo-Saxon sense of justice, as they are the first to claim that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. In Terry’s case, they gravely offended me and damaged my authority at the head of the England side, effectively creating a problem for the squad. I have never tolerated certain crossing of lines, so it was easy for me to spot it and take my decision to leave.”

Agreed

I don’t blame him at all. The FA making captaincy decisions is a big undermining of his authority.

by Joamiq on Feb 8, 2012 9:30 PM GMT up reply actions

So to recap:
-John Terry racially abuses Anton Ferdinand
-John Terry is not suspended for that abuse, because of his upcoming trial and the FA’s lack of will to do anything before that trial
-Trial is scheduled for after the Euros
-John Terry is stripped of the England Captaincy because the whole world saw him abuse Anton Ferdinand on youtube or wherever
-Fabio Capello is so outraged by the lack of due process and/or the unfair treatment of people who racially abuse other people that he steps down as England’s manager
-England declares Harry Redknapp to be the man for the job, right in the middle of a murderous run of games for Spurs

The world is a stupid, terrible place.

heart of a champion, will of the warrior.

by cap'n hack on Feb 8, 2012 8:23 PM GMT reply actions

I may make myself ill from standing up for John Terry

BUT the man is innocent until proven guilty. The trial should absolutely not have been pushed back, but until then, I’m not sure if the FA should have taken any action. If they were going to take action, they should have banned him outright until the case was resolved, not this stupid half measure about the captaincy.

by Skipjack on Feb 8, 2012 8:26 PM GMT up reply actions

The timing of it all was bad

they should’ve either made the decision to get behind him or strip the captaincy earlier. It’s not uncommon practice that an employer would suspend an employee pending the results of a trail or investigation that involves discrimination of some sort.

Precedent

Woodgate and Lee Bowyer were on trial for assault and both of them were made unavailable for England selection by the FA until the trial was over. They actually let Terry off easy here. Should have just banned him outright.

The halfway really made no sense. How will taking the captaincy from him make him less of a distraction? There he is, on the pitch, in the locker room, everywhere. Making him not captain is nowhere close to making him invisible, which is what the FA seemed to be after here.

If Harry says, “Well I’m off!” Does Levy have the authority to say, “Hahaha. No you’re not.” ? I don’t know what Harry’s contract says, but if Levy wouldn’t let Modric go for 40 million this summer, if he has any possible cards to play to keep Harry, you can expect him to play them.

This is just a question because I actually have no idea, but what can the FA do to Levy and Spurs if they don’t comply? Are there consequences for being on the FA’s bad side? Maybe it comes out in passive-aggressive means such as terms of appeals and suspensions and what not?

“I want to thank the support I’ve had from Tottenham, the support from Daniel Levy,” Redknapp stated. "If ever he thought there was a problem when he gave me this job – this was going on over three years ago – he would never have employed me. He knew this was a case that should never have come to court.

“I especially have to thank the fans of Tottenham – the Wigan game was the most moving I’ve ever felt it. To have them singing my name throughout the game, that will always be special to me. I’ll never forget that.

“Thanks for everything Tottenham. Oh, and good luck with the rest of your season. Peace bitches!”

by Lennon's Eyebrow on Feb 8, 2012 8:41 PM GMT reply actions

Harry's a smart talker

you’ll notice that he always talks up the opposing team as being tough and that even when criticizing players he’ll couch it in complements (yes, even when talking about Darren Bent missing a goal his mum could make, Harry complemented his usual skill). Naturally he’ll complement his boss and fans during a tough situation. I don’t think you can read anything more into it than that.

by rubbercarp on Feb 8, 2012 8:45 PM GMT up reply actions

Out of context that looks real bad

But knowing that he’s expressing relief at the trial pretty much negates any other implications. I read those quotes before the Capello resignation was announced.

by Steve. on Feb 8, 2012 8:47 PM GMT up reply actions

Yeah, I read them earlier today too.

I just. I don’t know. You’re both probably right. I just don’t want to believe he’d abandon us mid-season. If the FA let’s him do double duty, I guess that’d be fine and I could see that happening. But I have a really hard time imaging Harry just leaving this close to the end of the season with the team in such a good position.

by Lennon's Eyebrow on Feb 8, 2012 8:49 PM GMT up reply actions

’Arry’s sent two messages to the FA recently. The first is that he would take the job if offered (pinnacle of his career). The second is that he wants to be offered after the season ends (saying the FA should wait until after the season so as not to distract the manager from other responsibilities). Hopefully the latter is stronger than the former.

But I think that a caretaker manager is likely. Pearce is managing the UK Olympic team, so he’s ready for the job permanent or otherwise.

by rubbercarp on Feb 8, 2012 8:53 PM GMT up reply actions

Really? I don't remember hearing anything about those messages to the FA.

Last thing I remember hearing was “I’d get bored managing England” but yes, he would find it hard to turn down. I hope they give it to Pearce. That guy’s terrible.
