Younes Kaboul And Harry Redknapp Out For Liverpool Match

LONDON, ENGLAND - APRIL 09: Younes Kaboul of Spurs gestures during the Barclays Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Stoke City at White Hart Lane on April 9, 2011 in London, England. (Photo by Ian Walton/Getty Images)

EDIT: Comments closed, move to the game thread.

Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a big blow for today's Barclay's Premier League fixture with Liverpool. Ever present defender Younes Kaboul's knee is still swollen according to the Frenchman's Twitter. Kaboul's injury puts the make up of the Tottenham back-line into question, particularly if Ledley King is unable to play.

Michael Dawson should be ready to step in for Kaboul, but again, the stability of the backline will depend on whether or not King, who cannot play twice in one week and is often doubtful for matches will be able to play after playing against Wigan. Should King be unavailable Tottenham may have to turn to newly acquired Ryan Nelsen who has played only one Premier League match this season.

The loss of Kaboul is huge for Spurs as the imposing defender has been, not only Tottenham's most consistent defender this season, but also their best. This is not the sort of news the club needs ahead of a meeting with a suddenly energized Liverpool attack.

Additionally, Harry Redknapp will not be at Anfield tonight after his flight from City airport to Liverpool was, allegedly, cancelled. Kevin Bond and Joe Jordan will likely take over running the squad for the match. This shouldn't make too much difference as Redknapp likely already picked the squad. The only time this should make an impact is when substitutions are needed. The last time Bond and Jordan were in charge I seem to recall being displeased with their management of the substitutes.

This is not good.

I don’t really understand why Ledley played against Wigan. If we have to put Ryan Nelsen out there, things could get ugly. I’d almost rather play a CM out of position at CB.

by Joamiq on Feb 6, 2012 6:30 PM GMT reply actions

My only concern with Nelsen is his fitness.

If he’s healthy he’s competent. Better than playing Sandro or Livermore there. If he’s not healthy it won’t be pretty.

He’s a capable player if healthy. If not though we’re scrambling.

I still think this Charlie loan will bite us in the ass

I understand the reasons he wanted to go (Euros and he wants to remain primary RB for Croatia) but it leaves us thin. Not a fan personally.

Suns & Spurs (not San Antonio) fan.

by Willman on Feb 6, 2012 6:35 PM GMT up reply actions

Yeah.

This situation is why both loans made me feel nervous. You have to assume things like this are going to happen at some point, and if you really have league title aspirations, you have to be prepared for them to happen at bad times.

by Joamiq on Feb 6, 2012 6:36 PM GMT up reply actions

Not concerned about either, to be honest.

by johnf34 on Feb 6, 2012 6:34 PM GMT reply actions

I’ve still got us winning. Anyone (even Sandro) is replaceable except Modric and Bale.

by johnf34 on Feb 6, 2012 6:38 PM GMT up reply actions

Individually, Yes...

If we have to replace everyone at once, that’s a bit worrisome.

by ranoa513 on Feb 6, 2012 6:40 PM GMT up reply actions

This is a good point

Replacing one or two is alright, but having to replace our most consistent CB and a large chunk of first team selections becomes a headache.

Suns & Spurs (not San Antonio) fan.

by Willman on Feb 6, 2012 6:42 PM GMT up reply actions

At a certain point though, cumultatively, you've got too many replacements in

Against a team that is, for all of our Seventhpool jokes, not actually bad, we may have reached that point.

by Joamiq on Feb 6, 2012 6:41 PM GMT up reply actions

Cumultatively. Great.

I’ve already drenched the documents on my desk with sweat. I have the phear.

Not confirmed, no.

Windy tweeted that Sandro apparently didn’t travel and VDV wasn’t seen boarding the bus when they left the hotel.

Related aside,

I know a guy who was involved in distributing Smirnoff Ice and if you’ll notice in the ads, its always men drinking it. Because women will drink something marketed at men but men will not drink something marketed at women. I’ll bet Zima was the same way.

For all the good that did.

But the one time we saw Joe Jordan coach a match (PAOK, wasn’t it?) Spurs played bloody awful. This still doesn’t do much to settle my nerves.

I agree about Arry's subs being better than Jordan/Bond's

The game I have in mind is the 3-1 win over Fulham – Fulham were absolutely battering us and Jordan Bond took off Lennon for Defoe on 66 minutes and then put Sandro in for VDV (which should have been the first sub) on 78 minutes. It almost bit us in the ass then, hopefully it won’t be a problem today.
