Tottenham Have Found Their Goalkeeper Of The Future Because...
If you want to believe the ever reliable Jarrow and Hebburn Gazette, Here is the City, Club Call and Bleacher Report, Harry Redknapp has made Tim Krul Tottenham's top target for this summer! This is especially fantastic because Brad Friedel is 41 years old and Spurs are going to need a new goalkeeper sooner rather than later. A 23-year-old like Krul who is one of the best in the Premier League? Sign him up!
The basis for these reports that Krul is coming to Spurs is...you see, they talk about how...this source said that...but there is this quote that says. Well, there is no basis. You know, basic reporter-y things like sources and quotes, but it is happening! To make it even better, it is happening for the bargain basement price of free! At least that is what I'm led to believe because there is no price listed. Tim Krul, come on down!
In reality, Krul would be a fantastic signing for Spurs. Friedel has been strong this season and might be good next season, but the more years he goes on, the more likely it is that the next season is the one where age finally wins. As Branch Rickey once said (altered to make it applicable to football), "it is better to get rid of a player one year too early than one year too late."
If Spurs do go looking for a new goalkeeper, they couldn't do much better than Krul. As mentioned, he is young and one of the better goalkeepers in the league so the ridiculous insistance on "Premier League proven" actually works.
Newcastle slapped a £15 million price tag on Krul in January, but that was more of a "hands off" valuation than anything; although, Spurs would be wise to move on him before Euros in the unlikely event that he passes up Maarten Stekelenberg as the Netherlands number one and sees his price skyrocket. If Tottenham can find a way to snag him for £10 million or less, he would be a brilliant signing. Far more brilliant than unsourced reports without a quote or anything of substance to be found.

Hard for me to imagine him leaving Gladbach for anyone other than a Madrid, Barca or Man U.
But there is an absolute WEALTH of young goalkeeping talent in the Bundesliga right now. I’d take Leno, too, Sven Ulreich, & the bearded ’keeper at Schalke whose name escapes me.

I felt the same way about Neustadter and Reus
And I was wrong.

I'd take one of a number of keepers from the bottom half teams if we can't get Krul.
Mark Bunn, Michel Vorm, Ali Al-Habsi, David Stockdale- all good enough.

Good enough in the "would be on a par with our stars"
Not in a “we’ll settle for them” way.

Bunn and Stockdale on par with our stars?
Whoa. Umm…

Kevin, any updates on the Alex Smithies character that was profiled in DL’s shortlist in December?

Not in the present definitely
But as prospects maybe. Stockdale is almost certainly going to be great in the future

Kay maybe I'm going a little overboard but
We can’t have Friedel forever and my preference would be for someone young who we can mould into the framework of our team, preferably not in a horrible backfire-in-face Ben Foster David De Gea type way.

Oh, and Stockdale is 26
De Gea is 21 and has already had more spectacular games in his career than either of them.

Also 26 is still sufficiently young for a keeper
If he’s good we could eke a decade out of Stockdale at least.
Though yeah, we can go ahead and take Mark Bunn out of the equation now I guess.

Not a meme in this instance but my opinion
I understand that he is an excellent shot stopper but an absolute liability when he has to make an aerial save and I’m starting to think he’s developing a Torres-esque mental block about it. I know he’s capable of some exquisite stuff, one of the best in the world on his day, but if he’s no good from a corner then I don’t see what the point is. I would be rooting for Lindegaard if I were a Man U fan.

Mould a goalie?
goalie’s either contributr to the confidence of the defense, or they fail. Teams don’t mould goalies. Goalies gie teams the confidence to play. The one great aspect of having a senior citizen pro like Friedel (other than the fact he’s a strong goalie), is that perhaps HE would rub off on the other keepers at Spurs Lodge.
How about Basels Yann Sommer?
He’s 23 and looked great in this seasons Champions League, but apart from that I’ve not seen much about him. Do you guys think he would be good enough (yet)?

Disagree
I don’t think Krul is even in the same breath as Vorm when you’re talking athleticism which in my mind gives Vorm the higher upside. I also think Vorm is better with his feet. Don’t get me wrong, I like Krul and would be thrilled if he was our keeper. I just like Vorm a lot better.

Vorm?
I’d be just as happy with the Swansea keeper personally. He didn’t have the same back 4 for the 1st 14 games of the season and there were no seasoned internationals in front of him, but he has made a LOT more great saves this season than Krul. I rate Krul very highly, but I think the wiser money would go on Vorm, a much less hailed player with less limelight at a much smaller club. And also imo a top class keeper.
I dunno about that.
Vorm’s getting a LOT of props and is one of the reasons Swansea is doing as well as they are this season. I don’t think he’s flying under the radar as much as you think he is.
