No Benny, No Problem? Danny Rose is Ready to Go
There was bad news out of Spurs Lodge this morning, as Harry Redknapp announced that Benoit Assou-Ekotto had groin surgery on Friday that seems likely to keep the left back out of Sunday's North London Derby. The injury leaves a hole at left back, a position already left perilously thin after Sebastien Bassong's departure on loan. The only two options seem to be Danny Rose and Gareth Bale, out of position, to fill in at left back. But after the way Bale has played in recent weeks at left winger, it doesn't seem advisable to move him to defense. Instead, Spurs would be wise to go with the man who once did this against Arsenal:
Rose was perhaps Tottenham's best player on the pitch in an otherwise lackluster game against Stevenage. Playing left wingback, Rose raced up and down the pitch, breaking up play and quickly starting the counter-attack. Rose was the man who set up the Tottenham goal that wasn't, bursting to the byline to set-up Louis Saha's disallowed goal.
It's easy to forget now, but Rose started the last five league matches of 2010-11 at left back. His play was inspiring for a Spurs team that had lost hope for a Champions League return. He continued up his fine play with a starring run for the England U-21s this summer. But it has been Benoit Assou-Ekotto's sterling form which has pushed Rose back into obscurity.
In the interim though, it seems clear that the Tottenham coaches have been working diligently in turning the left winger into a left back, in almost reverse situation of Gareth Bale. Rose has a size disadvantage for a defender, standing only 5' 8". But he has the pace and defensive aggression to make up for his, pardon the pun, "shortcomings."
Rose will face a difficult test Sunday in likely facing Theo Walcott or Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. But the likes of Scott Parker and Gareth Bale will help provide cover for "Broadway Danny." Rose just needs to be disciplined in his position, regain some of his May 2011 form, and he should do well to fill in for BAE.
Look, nobody expects Rose to be Paolo Maldini on Sunday. But Rose has stepped up on a big occasion before. Let's see if he can help put Tottenham on their way to being the Kings of North London on Sunday.

I actually
think that this could really hurt us in this game. I don’t think he’s good enough defensively. ‘The Ox’ has been in really good form and I fear may tear Rose to shreds. I hope I am wrong, but I think Benny will be a big miss for this game.
the good news is that Arsenal haven’t been tearing anyone to shreds lately (ahem, Sunderland and Milan), so I am still hopeful of a good match and a Spurs victory. COYS
It's the North London Derby.
All bets are off.

Though I'm pretty sure he will start
the only reason he didn’t in Milan was because of the pitch and our pitch is very nice.

I think he can do a job
As long as he has the experience of Ledley in the middle of the back line to help direct him. Ideally I would hope that Benny makes a miraculous recovery but I think Rose can do the job., he justs needs leadership in the back to help him.
Suns & Spurs (not San Antonio) fan.
taking slight issue
With the suggestion that left back is out of position for Bale. Sure, you don’t want him to be there but Harry is on record as saying that it will be Weezus eventual role on the pitch.
That being said, an away game against Arsenal with their invisible defense just begs to have him on the ball in advanced positions so he can monster their quivering back four and give Emmanuelouis Sahadebayor all the ammunition they need.
After getting the scheduled crap performance out of their systems against Stevenage, I am looking forward to a return to the Modric-inspired total football that is likely to rip apart a crumbling dynasty at the Emirates.
Mmmm, I have issues with the idea that left-back is Bale's natural position.
I get the rationale that Harry’s laid out for it- he gets a longer run-up starting his attacks from a left-back position and thus is even more of a threat in powering forward during counters.
But the guy can’t defend for ish and is thus a total waste in defensive scenarios, and I don’t like how worryingly bare he leaves us when he pours forward from LB.

His recovery speed is incredible though
He used to just camp out in the attacking left corner and still easily get back to break up attacks down the wing.
