Tottenham Hotspur Vs. Newcastle, 2012 Premier League: Emmanuel Adebayor And Louis Saha Are Best Friends
In an absolutely stunning performance, Tottenham Hotspur ran riot on Newcastle United on Saturday evening, seriously crippling the Magpies' chances of finishing in European places. Less than a week after a difficult 0-0 draw at Anfield and in the midst of controversy surrounding Harry Redknapp's tax evasion case and status as potentially the next England manager, Spurs rose to the occasion and played like they had no distractions, thumping Newcastle 5-0.
Emmanuel Adebayor was unquestionably the star of the match, providing four assists in the first half and scoring on a brilliant volley in the second half. Louis Saha made his full debut for Spurs and was brilliant as well, finishing off two of Adebayor's assist and setting up Ade's goal. The two formed an incredible partnership and looked like they had been playing together for the better part of a decade.
Spurs got off to a perfect start with a fourth minute goal. As fantastic as the start was, no one could have guessed at the time what was about to transpire, but it was simply a sign of what was to come for the entirety of the match. Adebayor did almost all of the work with a great run down the right side before passing to Gareth Bale, who returned the ball with a one-touch pass. Ade hit a low ball across the face of goal from the byline and Benoit Assou-Ekotto, making a late run from his left back position, got onto it and smashed into the roof of the net.
They found their second just two minutes later, and in similar fashion. Once again, Adebayor ripped apart the Newcastle defense on the right, beating Fabricio Coloccini before playing a ball across the box for Saha, who scored his first goal in a Spurs shirt to make it 2-0 after just six minutes.
Niko Kranjcar, starting again in place of Aaron Lennon, got off to an extremely energetic start and put in another excellent performance. He would eventually score, but his first great opportunity came on the 16th minute, when Gareth Bale set up a chance. The Welshman's cross into the box was deflected out and sat up perfectly for Kranjcar at the edge of the box, but he blasted just over.
Tottenham scored their third just four minutes after that, with Adebayor and Saha combining for a second time. Newcastle right back Danny Simpson was the one abused this time, as Luka Modric drifted outside and played in a great low cross. Adebayor touched that cross into the path of Saha, who smashed it into the back of the net to make it 3-0.
Demba Ba nearly got his team back into the game in the 25th minute with an absolutely brilliant free kick. Brad Friedel just barely got across his goal to get a finger to it and tip it wide, but the referee didn't see Friedel's save and granted a goal kick.
An incredible fourth Spurs goal and fourth Adebayor assist would come in the 33rd minute. Adebayor tried to shoot this time and had a short-range effort saved by Tim Krul, but jumped on the rebound and touched it wide to Kranjcar, who had a simple finish.
Spurs spent much of the second half keeping the ball and were less rampant in attack. On one occasion, in the 58th minute, they had a 30-plus pass move that lasted more than a minute, ending in an Adebayor lay-off to Kranjcar, who got there just a half step too late and couldn't get a shot on target.
The fifth goal came in the 64th minute, and it was a much deserved one for Emmanuel Adebayor. Assou-Ekotto provided the setup with a great cross towards the back post that was met by Saha, who nodded down for Adebayor. He hit a wonderful volley into the back of the net, giving him a goal and four assists on the day and completing the scoring.
This win is the biggest of the season for Spurs, and also the heaviest of the season for Newcastle. These games against Liverpool and Tottenham were just the first two of a gauntlet of games that features matchups against Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United before the end of March.

Funny, but probably a bad idea to bring to the actual match

Key to success = 2 up top.

Seriously though I was thoroughly impressed with the Ade/Saha partnership.

Spurs over Newcastle, Gladbach over Schalke, can UMD make it a treble over Duke?

In all honesty,
I really hope this defeat doesn’t completely demoralize Newcastle. When they get their midfield back, I desperately hope they can get that 4th spot, if for no other reason than to keep Chelsea, Arsenal, and Seventhpool out of the Champion’s League.
COYS!
I think they'll be fine
The Fulham loss was worse than this and they bounced back. They are just a really thin squad and can’t afford not to have guys like Cabaye, Tiote and Taylor missing.

Just rewatched all the highlights
Saha’s first goal was seriously very good. Excellent technique to get that much hang time and power on the shot.
Highlights?
where do you guys get your highlights from online? youtube is realy shady with posting game highlights due to copyright stuff

Read through the gamethread
So much happiness and goodwill! Disappointed I couldn’t make the thread but what a match. Saha and Adebayor just clicked automatically.
Saha’s always been a technically skilled player and hopefully today marks the start of something big for him and the club.
Suns & Spurs (not San Antonio) fan.
There are five possibilities.
1. We’re just that good.
2. Mechanick was at WHL.
3. Ashlock left us, and he was dragging us down.
4. They wanted to show Harry why he shouldn’t go to England.
5. Sylvie was in the stands.
I go with #5.
I take umbridge with anyone saying we are better without ashlock

Niko
I said it in the game thread, but it bears repeating.
I was very happy to see that Harry stuck with Niko even though Lennon was fit. Niko has played very well while Lennon was out, and it was nice to see he wasn’t immediately dropped. I thought he had another great game and hope to continue seeing him starting in the future. I think he brings a lot more to the team than Lennon does.
Particularly admirable
considering how helpful Lennon would have been in the Liverpool game. We were desperately missing his pace.

If this was
the game that Mechanik got to see…goddammit I’m so happy for him yet hate him so much at the same time.

p.s. and as for Mechanik, i can’t even IMAGINE how he feels after being there for THAT!!!
So will 'arry pick up AVB as an assistant manager

Mea Culpa
I was vocally anti-Saha and I was wrong. Of course, one game and all that but I’m not sure I expected two goals from him this season based on watching him play for Everton. In ’arry I trust.
Also, where was that Pienaar for the last six months?

So...
…I was looking through the game thread and noticed a got a mention. Missed me? :c) Nice result and the Saha detractors should be shamed :cP Seems like the switch worked for everyone as Pienaar also scored today.

I'm a lifelong Spurs fan, who lives in Newcastle . . .
Now I can stride confidently through the office on Monday, without saying a word, in the knowledge that everyone now knows just how great Spurs are.
A few of the Toon fans in my office laughed at me when I mentioned how the pundits stated Spurs play the best football in the league.
As every sweeping move ripped through the Toon Army defence last night, I could almost smell the large humble pie that was cooking.

Great stuff
Must be a satisfying moment indeed. Incidentally do you find yourself being on the end of a lot of grief about being a ‘Cockney’ even if you’re not necessarily from London?
by Edward_Francis on Feb 12, 2012 11:49 AM GMT up reply actions
Yes, always . . . ha ha
I’m originally from Norfolk, but I don’t have a Norfolk accent either (Thank god).
My accent is just a fairly plain English one, but to the Geordies I’m just another Southerner and no different from a cockney, ha ha.
Incase you were wondering why I support Spurs, its because my Dad has been a Spurs fan since the 60’s. My first memory of Spurs was my Dad watching the 1991 FA Cup Final. From there on, I’ve always been a Spurs fan.
Anyone watching the City-Villa game?
Piss poor defending from Villa on the City goal. Corner comes in, 3 or 4 Villains run towards the far post where its landing, completely abandoning the area right in front of the goal, which is of course where it bounces to as Lescott bangs it in.
Eff's sake Villa
Your one chance to do something this season that people (fans or otherwise) would have appreciated and you blew it. Couldn’t even have held on for a point.
Robbie Keane looked absolutely dreadful today in the bits I watched
Like, seriously dire. I read an article today that suggested he could have another 18 months in the PL left in him if he came back, and today’s performance should be proof of just how much tosh that is. His first touch is absolutely shot. He can’t really do anything other than slam the ball home from about a yard these days, which to be honest is no change from his last few years at Spurs. £3.5m was seriously a massive bargain for him.
by Edward_Francis on Feb 12, 2012 10:23 PM GMT up reply actions
I was confused by how they used him though
Granted, it’s not as if they really had the opportunity to press the attack, but he’s not going to be very effective playing that deep.

Just saw that. Fantastic final, and even better because Gervinho and Drogba failed.

It had to be Gervinho!
But the Ivory Coast really disappointed me in the whole tournament. They’ve always played negative and never looked like they’re trying to score. And on top of that I haven’t seen a minute of Doumbia, which says a lot about that team I think..

This Generation of CIV..
Will it go down as the most talented team never to win anything? Jesus. Look at that roster compared to Zambia. How do they ever lose in Africa? It’s mind bottling, that’s for sure.
