Tottenham Hotspur Vs. Newcastle, 2012 Premier League: Lineups And Live Match Thread

Kyle Walker (L) and Jake Livermore of Tottenham Hotspur tussle for posession with Jonas Gutierrez of Newcastle United during the Barclays Premier League match between Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur. They play again on February 11, 2012. (Photo by Michael Regan/Getty Images)

Happy Spursday, Spursland! Tottenham Hotspur play Newcastle United today, if you didn't know. Chelsea and Liverpool dropped points today, so this is a huge game for the Magpies. Arsenal grabbed a late winner through TH14. Manchester United won earlier, so we're in need of three points to keep pace in the title race. This is your live match thread, here are your lineups.

Tottenham Hotspur lineup (4-4-2): Friedel; Walker, Dawson, King, Assou-Ekotto; Kranjcar, Modric, Parker, Bale; Adebayor, Saha

Substitutes from: Cudicini, Bongani, Nelsen, Rose, Livermore, Lennon, Defoe

Newcastle United lineup (4-4-2): Krul; Simpson, Williamson, Coloccini, Santon; Obertan, Guthrie, Perch, Gutierrez; Ba, Cisse

Substitutes from: Elliot, Ferguson, Gosling, Abeid, Ben Arfa, Lovenkrands, Sh. Ameobi

That front two of Newcastle looks formidable, but their midfield looks a whole lot less threatening without Yohan Cabaye and Cheik Tiote. It's great to see Aaron Lennon and Jermain Defoe on the bench, and they'll be big if we're not ahead late.

Kickoff is at 12:30 p.m. ET, 5:30 p.m. local time. You can catch the game on FOX Soccer Channel in the USA, Sportsnet World in Canada and ESPN in the UK. Please, no discussion of alternative means. COYS!

Probably

I like him, but Livermore is in form and fit. We still opted to play 4-4-2.

by Kevin McCauley on Feb 11, 2012 4:59 PM GMT up reply actions

I'm not

Modric handles the passing and Parker and Livermore the tackling these days. Don’t know why we’d want to play someone who does both those things slightly worse, and to top it off can barely even jog lightly without getting gassed.

by Edward_Francis on Feb 11, 2012 5:00 PM GMT up reply actions

Yeah, I don't know.

THudd strikes me as an impact player. Remember when he came on at Young Boys & just totally calmed the game down? You’re right that Parker tackles better & Modric has a defter touch (don’t know about Livermore), but there is something decidedly pacifying about Big Tom’s play.

Good morning, everyone, by the by.

by The Sleeper's Sleep on Feb 11, 2012 5:07 PM GMT up reply actions

He was great in Europe

And I think he’d be great in a midfield three with any of Parker, Livermore or Sandro (athletes, hard workers) and Modric while he’s playing farther forward than he has this season.

SB Nation's World Soccer Editor, manager of Cartilage Free Captain, contributor to Acme Packing Company.

by Kevin McCauley on Feb 11, 2012 5:09 PM GMT up reply actions

You think taking Modric out of the deeper role is the best way forward?

I dunno, it seems like the times we’ve struggled most this season are when he’s had to push up to fill the gap left by VDV when injured. We just seem to lose the bridge between attack and midfield when he plays forward.

by Edward_Francis on Feb 11, 2012 5:10 PM GMT up reply actions

I mean Hudd can do the bridging job in your scenario but, I dunno, I just think Modric does it best.

by Edward_Francis on Feb 11, 2012 5:12 PM GMT up reply actions

Because there's no Huddlestone

SB Nation's World Soccer Editor, manager of Cartilage Free Captain, contributor to Acme Packing Company.

by Kevin McCauley on Feb 11, 2012 5:12 PM GMT up reply actions

Maybe that's Tom's best scenario, not necessarily Modric's.

& in that case I’m guessing you should always defer to where Modric plays best. That said, I’ll point back to my suggestion that Huddlestone’s an impact player. He can change a game (smooth it out, I think).

by The Sleeper's Sleep on Feb 11, 2012 5:14 PM GMT up reply actions

Question for Kevin or anyone else of a tactical bent

How do you see our front two playing off each other today? Adebayor dropping deep and onto the wings to join the attack buildups with Saha poaching, as when Defoe plays?

by Edward_Francis on Feb 11, 2012 5:02 PM GMT reply actions

Makes sense

But this is Harry Redknapp. They’ll play however they damn well please.

Really hope Saha bangs in a couple this season

Partly so we know we have a viable third option (Defoe will always rank above him for me) but partly because I really want some extra vindication of the moneyballin’

by Edward_Francis on Feb 11, 2012 5:06 PM GMT up reply actions

How about a couple this match?!

by ahowie on Feb 11, 2012 5:55 PM GMT up reply actions

Saha's most effective off the shoulder of the last man

And Adebayor can handle the dropping deep role, so this makes sense. But I have no idea what Saha’s pace looks like these days

by Lennon's Eyebrow on Feb 11, 2012 5:13 PM GMT up reply actions

So I take it the commentariat rates JL above THUDD

by ndx on Feb 11, 2012 5:03 PM GMT via mobile reply actions

On his day THUDD is better

But he hasn’t had his day for nearly two seasons now. He’s never been fit and looked like he’d forgotten how to get into the rhythm of the game later on last season. He’s just not going to fit easily back into the side any time soon.

by Edward_Francis on Feb 11, 2012 5:05 PM GMT up reply actions

No, just depending on opponent/situation

They’re both deep-sitting central midfielders, but Livermore is an athletic energy man, while Huddlestone is a deep-lying playmaker. They’re not very comparable.

I really hope in the future Liverpool fans will look back at a time when they not only refused to condemn Suarez but treated him like a returning hero and supported him when he was acting like he is now, and disassociate themselves from it entirely.

by Edward_Francis on Feb 11, 2012 5:11 PM GMT up reply actions

I think at some point or other Suarez has to grow up

by ndx on Feb 11, 2012 5:13 PM GMT via mobile up reply actions

Totally agreed

Same problem as Balotelli. Like a spoiled, misbeahving child that none of their respected elder figures are castigatating before they get out of control, and thus they’re getting to think they can do whatever they pleased.

by Edward_Francis on Feb 11, 2012 5:16 PM GMT up reply actions

It just seems to me like

Suarez is trying to be more and more of a douchebag. Can I say that word? Maybe I’ll just say asshole. Every week he does something else to make people hate him. And it’d be cool if he had as much raw talent as Balotelli and was a tremendous dick. But he’s been playing kind of like absolute shit this season, hasn’t he? (6 goals in 19 games, but he wastes so many good chances)

I think part of what makes Suarez so frustrating is precisely that he IS so talented.

He’s got preternatural footballing ability, but he’s singlehandedly ruined this season’s iteration of one of the greatest rivalries in the EPL, & he’s done it in one of the worst, most ignorant ways possible.

For reasons I can’t yet articulate, I’m not confortable lumping Balotelli in with Suarez. Is he petulant, immature & at times out of control? He is. But his transgressions, as it were, are not on the same level as Suarez or Terry. Again, I’m not sure I have a full understanding of why that’s my impulse, bu there you have it.

I don't see why it's so inconceivable that Harry could start Ade & Saha & VDV

Just too much attack, not enough possession? Or maybe we want to rotate the three of them to keep them healthy down the stretch? Or is it too much of a tactical stretch for ’Arry?

by TCSpurs on Feb 11, 2012 6:37 PM GMT via iPhone app reply actions

An observation.

Having Saha and Adebayor up top together has allowed Adebayor do his normal drifting wide routine, while still leaving a true striker in the box. This has meant we miss Lennon less, and Kyle Walker hasn’t been so prominent in running that entire right wing. Which is also a good thing.

by Lennon's Eyebrow on Feb 11, 2012 6:37 PM GMT reply actions
