This game marks the end of a consecutive 310 premier league games that Brad Friedel started in goal. An absolutely amazing feat.
First, I would like to say the reason I like the move. With Caulker's energy and tenacity, Gallas' leadership, Vertonghen being Vertonghen, and now Lloris in goal, I can't help but feel like this string of letting one in late, the equalizer or trash goal, is over. Finally, it is amazing how frustrating it is, even when we win, but when we can't for the life of us keep a clean sheet. Hugo Lloris, the french captain, is a top 5 goalkeeper in the world, he's 25 and I don't think there is much doubt out there that in five or six years he will be, at least arguably, the best goalkeeper in the world. So I have no problem with the move, great move.
However, I would like to put my appreciation for Brad Friedel out there. His nearly 8 year string comes to a close and he is sitting on the bench smiling and laughing. He was not only the face of US football abroad for a decade, but also a prominent figure even after he retired from international games, he is the face of class and professionalism. A man who by all means is still a world class goal keeper at 41, he has more heart and class then I could ever dream of. So I raise a glass to Brad Friedel.
