Tottenham Hotspur face Norwich in the League Cup on Wednesday. They should bench some key players.
We know that Andre Villas-Boas, and by extension Tottenham Hotspur, take the UEFA Europa League very seriously. I liked that we used it as an opportunity to give a look to young players under Harry Redknapp, but I understand why Villas-Boas wants to win the competition and why he does not play reserve teams. I get it.
The Capital One Cup is also a real competition, but it's less of a real competition than the Europa League. It is the fourth most important competition on Tottenham's schedule this season. Everyone will be happy to win it, but no one will be too sad if Spurs play some kids and lose at Carrow Road on Wednesday.
So for Ledley's sake, can we rest some of our tired legs and play some freaking kids?
I'm not suggesting that Tottenham should field an entire youth/reserve team against Norwich, but I think we've seen over the last couple of games exactly how much we cannot afford to lose some players due to injuries. The team looks like a giant clustercuss without Moussa Dembele in the team, and lacked some serious bite without Gareth Bale in the first half against Chelsea.
Sandro and Aaron Lennon are having the best years of their careers so far, while Jermain Defoe is Tottenham's only fit striker, so can we please not put any of those three players in the 18-man squad?
I know, to dare is to do, but these guys aren't cyborgs. Playing the same guys for 60 games is a recipe for disaster. It doesn't work. It's a bad idea. We need to not do it.
I know Carroll isn't in favor right now. I know Dempsey isn't a striker. I just do not want to see Lennon, Sandro and Defoe anywhere near that damn pitch tonight.
