Envy Amongst the Commentariat
I posted this question in today's FA Cup live thread, but wanted to ask again here...
"I’m curious to know what role envy plays in your life as a Spurs fan with regards to fan culture. Let me give an example: I’m proud to be Spurs, & I’m especially happy with the singing that happens at WHL & away, but I also can’t help but wish Spurs support had the same kind of crazy poetic madness of Carsi, the ultras for Besiktas, or the tifo of Borussia Dortmund or Roma, or the political awareness of FC St. Pauli. Are there other fan cultures you find yourself a little jealous of? If you were to transplant some aspect of fan culture from another club to ours, what would you pick?"
Thanks for your help, everyone. I'm anxious to hear your responses.

Okay, I know you said this is all you can say, but say more.
What made you envious, beside the fact that we got outplayed at home by PAOK?

Haha wasn't really a serious comment
Just that the PAOK fans were absolutely tearing it up with their celebrations as their team was outplaying us, looked like it might have been a pretty fun sweating screaming mass to have been a part of.
On a more serious note, and one which I know will probably be fairly contentious, I’ve always admired Newcastle’s fan base. As it is in a more general sense with the lovely Geordies, there’s a real sense there that once you’re part of them, you’re a part of a tight-knit family.

My envy is more directed towards Tottenham support – I wish other teams I cheer for had the type of support and creativity to see at Tottenham (and other English) matches.

Interesting. The Cal marching band is supposed to be pretty incredible, right? & a little anarchic...
I ask because I feel like the closest equivalent of footy fandom in the States occurs in college. I’m thinking about this in terms of some of the hilarious stuff you see in stadia & gyms across the country: the signs, the fatheads, the confetti, the miniature schooner (OU only), flaming trumpets in the pep band (Michigan Tech only). & weird as it is, Northwestern MLS teams strike me as having much more creative fan cultures than most of the EPL. (If you don’t believe me, check out some of the tifo coming out of Portland & Seattle.)

The Cal marching band is awesome
And there are lots of great traditions in student sections around the country. What is frequently missing is the creativity and spontaneity you see in Europe.

I saw that Tifo live. I mostly envy the history and traditions of English Soccer, not the practice.

I'm pretty dang envious of FC St. Pauli's sausage train.
Actually, I really like FC St. Pauli in general. Were they consistently in the Bundeslige, I suspect I’d be a pretty rabid fan. They’re a perfect storm of “footballissitude” and crunchy liberal politics.

I'm jealous of any club that can shoot flares off in the stands.
Seriously. That shit is crazy. I saw Fluminense beat Boca in the Copa Libertadores semi final at the Maracana a few years ago, and the celebrations during/after that game were the most insane thing I’ve ever seen.
Here’s a video my friend put on facebook. I have no idea if y’all will be able to see it.

sort of
Living in Portland, I’m in awe of the Timbers fans. I wish I had the patience to watch the MLS, but having been watching the English game since childhood I just can’t.
I went to a Japanese baseball game in Hiroshima a couple of years ago. During the 7th inning stretch, everyone blows up a big balloon and pinches the end. They play a song, and at the end, everyone lets go and sends thousands of balloons shooting all over the stadium. It’s awesome.
Also! We were two rows behind a brass band that carried their instruments to the ballpark.
