To Dare Is To Do: A Message To The Lurkers
Tottenham Hotspur are going to win the title. And I want you to be around for it.
This site has become somewhat of a home for so many of the regulars around here. We Chatty Cathys all thoroughly enjoy the community here but we want more of you to join us this spring.
The club is in a historic march towards its first potential title run in quite some time and you'll be better off joining us to discuss the squad we all know and love so dearly.
It doesn't matter if you hardly know anything about the team. Hell, most of us didn't know much when we joined but the addicting nature of this site sure teaches really fast.
Lurkers, come out of your shadows and give us your insight on Spurs. Stop by a Game Thread. Seriously, you'll be laughing and typing so much you'll miss most of the game, but you won't really even care. Take a listen or two to Wheeler Dealer Radio to get your feet wet on Spurs.
I will send you some advice though. Don't ever have food in your mouth when looking at a Lennon's Eyebrow or Skipjack picture post. You'll spit it all out of your mouth or choke on it. Anytime The Sleeper's Sleep writes an article, tune out anything and everything you may be doing and give the thing a read. If you should come across MennoDaddy in the comments, make sure you address him as Sir Uncle Menno. (As he would say, "BEST. UNCLE. EVAR.")
In all seriousness Cartilage Free Captain is a blast. Whether you want to casually hop in and start by commenting in theroosevelts' Daily Hoddle of Coffee or jump right in full blast we'll welcome you with class and respect straight away.
It's obvious there are hundreds of lurkers sitting around who read this site every single day. Today this is your chance to be one with us. It's time for you to give this a chance. I don't know if I can speak for everyone, but following Spurs wouldn't be half as fun as it is if it wasn't for CFC.
Don't wait until this summer to hop on the greatest site on the web of the soon-to-be-champion Spurs.
As the Spurs official motto says "To Dare Is To Do." I dare every lurker on this site to make a comment down below to chat Spurs with us today. Introduce yourself to us, tell us how you became a fan or ask a question about something. Want to be bold in your first moments as a member of the glorious commentariat? Start a battle about the quality of America with Bryan Ashlock.

Alright convinced
Been following Spurs for about a year now and been checking out CFC for the Game Threads for a month or 2. Like what I’ve seen just haven’t jumped in with both feet yet

I’ve been trying to get into LGT as well.

I really like DBN’s content and what Chris et al. do but what really sets them back is the community. I don’t want to say it’s horrible, but it’s horrible. Such a stark contrast between the whipsmart and silly goofiness of CFC and the intelligent, sarcastic and insanely analytical approach at LGT. DBN’s posters as a whole are just so much more basal, it’s really noticeable to me.
/snob
CFC is hands down, by far the most friendly of the three. There is never any venom on here. DBN is the complete opposite, I’ll agree. Those people are so passionate and opinionated and there are some crazy posters. I’ve been turned off a few times over the years by the LGT community because of how overly analytical it gets. It’s fun to back stuff up with all the numbers baseball have but it’s a little overboard there at times. If you don’t back up every comment with some numbers you’re going to get ripped apart. Three very, very different communities. I should have clarified but I meant we were spoiled because of the great content those three put out.
Browns, Indians and Spurs! Something about Tottenham and Cleveland sports must mesh together. Hmm…
I love LGT. I like DBN’s content, but their community is so bad that I hardly go anymore. CFC seems delightful so far.
Agreed. And I want to be fair to the DBN community, there are definitely some good posters there, but being the most active blog community-wise of the three, maybe just the sheer volume of shitty posters stands out more.
I think that’s probably it. Jay’s attitude at LGT rubs me the wrong way once in a while, but DBN really needs someone like him to wade in and scare away the chaff.
I should probably post more Spurs stuff before people get annoyed with me.
Football blogs are like that
I feel the same way about the Denver blog too, and I think you are right about the cause being the higher number of visitors/posters.
Don't get me started on the Giants blog here

I’ve played the sport my entire life through youth, high school, club, and college. Robbie Keane was my favorite player growing up (grandparents are from Ireland and got me into the sport) and when he went to Spurs I followed him and made Tottenham my allegiance.

started playing fantasy footie two years ago, knowing nothing about the league. gravitated towards spurs during the CL chase and halfheartedly followed them last season. found this site during the summer transfer period, have been reading the articles every day, and am finding myself much more into the club.
come on you spurs, canes, skins, braves, and demon deacons!
We need a refocused effort on Fantasy Footie next year
Sadly, I missed it this year. We need weekly smack talk and rivalry bullshit.
Does Yahoo run one? I always find their leagues superior to other sites. Particularly in baseball. Ooooh. CFCaptain fantasy baseball!

New Here
I am, first and foremost, OBSESSED with the Seattle Sounders. Last off-season was un-bearable, so I began hunting for an EPL team to support. I did some research (including here) and Spurs just seemed to fit. This has been my first whole season watching the club, and man did I pick a good one. The product on the field has me. CFC also does a great job of keeping me well informed and entertained. Love it here, even though I mostly lurk.

obsessed with Sounders to!!! Love Spurs and Sounders!
"It's magnificent to be in Europe, and this club - a club like Tottenham Hotspur - if we're not in Europe.... we're nothing. We're nothing." - Bill Nicholson
Sounders 'till I die
I grew up in Florida, and was a big Tampa Bay Mutiny fan. Even though I lived on the other side of the state my friends and I would still road trip to at least 1 game a season. Until, of course, 10 years ago (to the day just about) when they were contracted by the league along with the Miami Fusion. I wasn’t happy with the move and even less so at the prospect of following another team, so I gave up on MLS. I moved to the cascades outside Seattle around ‘03 and started following the Sounders. Because they were a USL team it didn’t feel like cheating on the Mutiny, and when they got “promoted” to the MLS I couldn’t be happier to have an MLS club again.

Greetings fellow Cockerels. Been following Spurs since 06. Ducks, Blazers, and Timbers fan as well.
I saw Teemu Taino clear a ball off his own line that would have sealed a win for the Timbers against RBNY last year.

Generally a lurker
but mostly due to my time-shifted watching habits. I do read the full commentariat post game regardless. Oh, and I never can remember my login.
I quit a lifetime of watching MLB three years ago and the NFL long ago and needed something to fill in the winters when not watching the Celtics. Picked Spurs mostly out of a hat, but the fact that they had a rooster mascot and Crouch (who cracked me up) sealed the deal. Lived through the Champions League season and the ascendancy of Bale and now I’m hooked. Love the site, and all hail the commentariat.

Not Quite A Lurker
As I’ve posted before, but not often. I’m Fnarf, or Steve if you prefer. I live in sunny Seattle, Washington. I can occasionally be found down at the George and Dragon if Spurs are on and Mrs. Fnarf is feeling amenable.
I’ve been following, er, “following” Spurs since 1984, when my English roommate taught me everything there is to know about the game, and that year’s Hoddle and Waddle team, and also in an annual trip to the one game that would be broadcast, via a giant truck-mounted satellite dish hauled to a local (California) bar: the FA Cup. This was my first experience with many English traditions: baked beans for breakfast, Guinness at 6 AM, singing, chanting, scarves, and even a “bit of argy-bargy” the following year when I heard the Everton fans in the room sing “Who’s That Lying On The Runway” at the Man Utd fans.
I use quotation marks because I didn’t actually get to SEE Spurs, not even on TV, for many years, back in those pre-internet, pre-Sky days when even finding scores was usually impossible. Remember, back then, you couldn’t even watch most English matches on TV even if you lived there. Andrew (the roomie) used to get thick packets of clippings from his mum back in Southend, which I would pore over like I was deciphering a secret code. “Hey, Andrew, is this Ozzie Ardiles any good?”
Despite watching a steadily increasing number of World Cup games in ‘86, ’90, and ’94, and the advent of taped games (I still fondly recall the Irish bar in NYC where the fellow would come through the door with a paper bag full of VHS cassettes on Sunday evening), I didn’t really get to see many actual facts about Spurs until sometime in the late 90s when I found them on the internet. Still no video, but results, team sheets, tables and news. We (my wife is a Liverpool fan who actually attended matches at Anfield in the early 80s) finally broke down and signed on for cable TV in 2004, I think, and that’s when the real action began. I could watch games live, from White Hart Lane!
And here we are today. This is my new Spurs home. I got kicked off of the COYS blog for saying rude things about the New York Yankees, believe it or not, but I can be a gentleman when I want. You folks are funnier than they are.
Now let’s go out and win the goddamn title! COME ON YOU SPURS!

Been lurking for a while, now I comment.
After the World Cup, I wanted to get into soccer more and decided I should follow an EPL team. I decided on Tottenham because of their affiliation with the San Jose Earthquakes, and also because I had enjoyed playing as them in FIFA (hey, you gotta start somewhere!). I began reading this blog everyday during the transfer window, and while I still consider myself a soccer neophyte, I feel like I’ve learned a lot more about the subtle elements of the beautiful game as well as more about Spurs. Oh and P.S.: am I the only one with an irrational love affair for Peter Crouch?

I know he's no longer on Tottenham, but he's still one of my favorite players.
It’s probably because of my experiences using him in FIFA, where he is just way too good.

I wouldn't call it a love affair
and I’m glad we’re rid of him, but I too had a bizarre fascination with the tall one. Three Meter Peter. Not so much his height, but the impossible contortions he would get his body into when striking (and missing). Every week there’s a photo of Crouchie where you can’t tell his legs from his arms. And the way he runs, like a giraffe.
The giraffe description might be the most accurate of him I've ever read.
I’d much rather Adebayor than Crouchie, but he’s still one of my favorite players.

And you’ll know I love Crouchinho probably more than any other writer on the site.
by Brian Mechanick on Jan 6, 2012 6:37 AM GMT up reply actions
Guilty too...
Though the advent of Ade has made me more comfortable with Crouch going, as he simply wouldn’t get a game when Ade is fit. However I’ll always love him for his goals, teamwork and attitude for us, and even the fact that he plays for the luddites of Stoke (AND that handball) can’t stop that.
I'll admit it
I’m another lurker who started following the Spurs due to the freak-show value of having Crouchy. Well him and the club name tickled my yank sensibilities (“LOL, Tottenham wut-spurs?”). Even though they’re now Crouchless, the Spurs still have my support, and I’ve successfully transferred my man-crush over to the Weesus (Hallowed Be His Name).
I’ve only been following them a few years, though. I was pretty skeptical when some friends introduced me to FIFA 10, but now I’m into it way more than they (they are Liverpool for some vague reason involving the Beatles). I’m still learning the ins and outs of the EPL and the soccer world at large which is a pretty lonely task given that I live in Iowa where nobody really follows anything but Hawkeye football. Hence the lurking.

Challenge Accepted
Never really followed the game until just before moving to NYC three years ago. My roommate-to-be was a Yiddo, and on our last day of apartment hunting, he dragged me (“It’s noon, I need to go to this bar right now.” / “Ok!”) out to a little bar in Brooklyn Heights…and there was singing, and… what the hell, I’d forgotten how much I like watching this game, and, hey, beer!
Ten months later, I was sitting shelf side when Rafa buried two on the man who is now quite possibly my all-time favorite bald guy. And that’s saying something — one of my best friends is bald.
In July, Spurs came to NY, which was bonkers, and in February a small pile of NY Spurs made the flight to Milan to see us eke one out at the San Siro. I think it was sitting there, in the rain, in Italy, that I realized: I’ve lost my mind.
Well, no turning back now — COYS.

Wasn’t too bad. We went over without, as AC don’t sell online or by phone (plus, my Italian is poor at best). Tickets are sold at banks (er?), and the only available pair were up in the Ultras section. It seemed to present rough choice between fully expressing our feelings at the game, or probably getting stabbed.
Then, hours before the match, we met a guy who called a guy who had some other guy meet us at a hotel 20 minutes away who sold us spare media comp tickets, sideline, 17th row, and kindly declined the golden opportunity to completely fleece us. So, lots of yelling, no stabbing.
“Ah well, ma’am, you see we all know each other!” (Danny Blanchflower to Dutchess of Kent at the 1961 Cup Final. The Dutchess asked why the Leicester City players had names on their tracksuits and the Spurs team didn’t.)

Not really a lurker...
Knowing that I just discovered this site two days ago. I know, it’s a crime, so I ask to not be banned straight away!
Anyway, instead of being a typical American kid and playing football, I decided to live ironically and play football (soccer for more ignorant Americans (jk :-P)). Loved it so much I just had to grab on to a team and support them. My first professional football team was (and still is for MLS) the Houston Dynamo as I’m an avid Houston sports nut. I didn’t get into European football until, sadly, 2010 and climbed onto the Spurs bandwagon. Yes, I developed an unnatural man crush (is it REALLY that unnatural?) with Gareth Bale after his stunning performance against Inter.
After really sitting down and watching Spurs play, I knew that I had found my EPL team. I love the attacking-centric approach that they take; as a defender/midfielder in my “playing days” I appreciate a more aggressive approach. If there was one team that I could have dreamed (if I knew they existed at the time) of playing for, it definitely would be Spurs. The chemistry is magnifying to watch on the field, and I’m excited to see them in competition for the top spot this season!
My thoughts are like Brian Cushing on the field: Everywhere.
For future reference, Mr. Bale is known as Weezus (and you’ll see that word used all the time, I promise) around here because of the combination of Welsh + Jesus. So yes, there are others with this crush as well.
Soccer fan since '96, Spurs fan since '06.
Was just getting into the EPL and deciding on a team when a friend of mine who had played GK for Spurs youth teams decades ago still had some business contacts with Spurs invited me to a match at the Lane. I happened to be working in the UK after heading across the pond for the ‘06 World Cup. Well, he couldn’t get the promised tickets so he called in a favor with Tony Berry, former Deputy Chariman of the club. After quick trip down to Oxford Street to buy a new suit, I was invited into the owner’s box for the early season Everton match in 2006. The game itself was actually rubbish. Everton went down to 10 men but still came away with all 3 points because Spurs couldn’t even register their first shot on goal until extra time. I remember Andy Johnson was a beast in that game holding the ball up on the counter all by himself. And though I was a SPurs fan from that day forward, eating a pre-match sea bass at a table across from the board of directors and a cup of tea at halftime with two England internationals from the ’66 team will do that for you, I was hoping not to see much of Edgar Davids ever again.
Off topic: if you check my avatar pic on the right, that’s me with the game ball form the USA/Algeria match that Landon Donovan kicked into the stands. I was the lucky schmuck who ended up with it on that amazing night.

What do you get to keep the balls that go into the stands like in baseball. thats so cool in England you have to give them back.
Well it was the very end of the game,
earlier in the match and we (my best friend who accompanied me to SA and I) probably would have had to give it back.
We got our tickets through the USSF and were in a huge section of USA fans, none of which were going anywhere anytime soon. We were celebrating with that crowd in the stands a good 30 minutes after the whistle and none of the stewards came near to break it up, or ask about the ball. Finally that whole last section filtered out the doors, and we tucked the ball away in a USA flag my friend had been wearing as a cape to make sure we could get it out of the gates.

Been following the site since June...
My friends are hardcore soccer fans and I never really got into it. I told them I’d pick a team to follow starting this year, and chose Spurs for some reason. Glad I did! Having a lot of fun watching them play. I’ll try to comment more for sure.
Oh, hello there.
I’ve been playing soccer since I was a young boy, but never had anything on TV except World Cup matches and the occasional lousy MLS game. A couple of years ago, I was finally able to fork over the cash for FSC, and found myself in need of a side to root for. My Cleveland sensibilities wouldn’t let me choose a team dripping with oil money, but I wanted one with history and a remote hope of a top 4 finish someday. Spurs seemed like a good choice. I’ll admit it became easier when Peter Crouch left, because I could not stand him.
I still play adult city league soccer, but my local field is sponsored by Chelsea. It’s awful.
I'm American . . .
. . . but in 1974 I was in my early twenties living in Dublin and was exposed to soccer and the World Cup in a way that, at the time, was unavailable in the US. Especially, I (and many others) was taken with Cruyff and the Dutch national team.
When I came back to LA I, went to a few Aztecs games read what I could about soccer. Danny Blanchflower’s quote about glory stuck with me and I began trying to follow Spurs. It’s a good name, Tottenham Hotspur.
I love this site and I’ll try to comment now and then, but lurking suits me.
“The freat fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It’s nothing of the kind. The game is about glory. It’s about doing things in style, with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom.” – Danny Blanchflower, 1972.

The OG Lurker of CFC?
I’ve been lurking this blog since VDV joined Spurs (essentially the baby stage of this blog), and I thought I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for you meddling kids! I’ve had my ups and downs following the blog, but you could say now I’m a daily follower of CFC. I even listen to the insightful podcasts as well on occasion.
I’m a sportswriter for my school newspaper, but I never like to write on internet sports blogs. Mostly because I felt incredibly awkward talking to anonymous strangers. And coming from the West Coast (as my name indicates) in which many Spurs matches tend to start at like 6:30 am on Saturday mornings, when I pay most of my sleep debt, I never commented on your hilarious gamethreads. But I guess then is then, and now is now. A new year, and a new commitment, I suppose.

Let’s me and you start our own DVR gamethreads, which will begin at 2 pm PST. We’ll have our own inside jokes and nicknames and not explain them to anyone else. Maybe if Skipjack asks really nicely, we’ll let him come too.
I love it. I thought about doing something like this alone, only to realize how idiotic I would look to write 10 consecutive posts about the game hours after it was done. How dare the Premier League not account for its West Coast American fans during its schedule process?!?!?!

I live in bangkok which is +7 hours GMT so the Saturday Sunday games are on between 10pm and 12am but the bloody mid week games start 3am which is a bit of a killer.
Ouch. Do you still wake up and watch the games? If so, a Spurple (away kit) Heart badge is on your way to Bangkok.

Lurking since the beginning of this season
Been following Spurs for 3 seasons now. At the beginning, after much google and wikipedia about the history of the premier league clubs, I jumped in with Spurs. I can’t imagine supporting any other team.
Living in the US means I don’t get to chat as much about football(soccer) as I do about football(handegg). But I do lurk the CFC gamethreads pretty often, mostly during the weekly games when I’m still at work. Love this blog, read the Hoddle every morning.
I didn’t really get into professional soccer till Convey went to DC and when Spurs signed him (only to have the FA later reject it) I began loosely following them. When they finished 4th and I figured out how to find games online for free is when my interest really picked up.
also a skins fan so I need some hope in my life
Hello, I’m Aaron from Fort Collins, CO. I’ve been supporting Spurs since the 09-10 season, when my brother, fresh out of the Marine Corps, got me interested in the EPL. He is a Seventhpool supporter (it’s very scary to troll a Marine in such a manner, even if he is your brother) and I figured I needed a rival to support. I chose Spurs because they seemed to be a team on the rise, and doing it the right way. Bale quickly turned into my favorite player, which certainly helped as well.
I’ve been around the site for a few months now, commenting occasionally. I actually started out on SB Nation at Mile High Hockey, the Colorado Avalanche blog, so like a fellow poster above, I came to CFC via a hockey blog.
How quickly is football growing in the US ?
How quickly is football growing in the US ? it seems from the outside at lest it is growing very fast, and what about Spurs are we gaining fans more or less than other teams?
Spurs are gaining, but not as much as the traditional Sky 4
The big 4 and Man City still get promoted more in the States, but Spurs are becoming the chic alternative choice. Fulham and Everton are gaining a lot of fans because of Dempsey and Donovan.
This
probably a big reason why I’m a Spurs supporter. If you are a contrarian and/or cannot stand supporting a traditionally successful and/or popular team, then Spurs are for you. Still a kind of alt choice though. The couple times I’ve talked to english people about footie they’re always a bit surprised to find an American Spurs fan. American United, Scum, Chelski, and Seventhpool supporters are similarly confused.
O's, Ravens, and Spurs
Agreed.
I decided I would not be a fan of any of the Big Four. It’d be like if a British person came to America and was like, “Oh I love the Yankees and the Lakers”. Cool story bro.

Hi.
Lifelong spurs fan here (I’m 27 so missed most of the good bits until recently), from East London. Haven’t actually been to WHL for many years though :(
Really fun blog, I’ll try and stay involved.

Cracking Idea...
But the games are sold out these days, long before they go on general release… Either that or there are one or two restricted view seats left. Maybe I’ll see if I can get one of those package things, you know stay in a hotel 15 minutes from your front door and you can go to the game.
I'm in...
Great to be here. I’m a Londoner who became a glory-hunting Spurs fan after we won the Cup twice in 81/82. Obviously I envisaged decades of unbroken dominance for us (hey ho)… but the ride has been a thrill anyway :-) And I’m VERY excited about this team/season Look forward to getting involved (though I can confirm that the match threads are so good they’ve thoroughly distracted me from the match in the past).
Right, I’m off to find me an avatar…

I can’t stress enough to my fellow Americans that you should save up your pennies and get to WHL for a match.
One reason for my Allegiance
When I picked Spurs, I had this in mind. I figured if I ever get to England, a team in London would be easiest to catch. So many reasons came up Spurs…

But, frankly, just getting to LONDON is on my bucket list, and that’s not in the cards right now either. (Airfare is EXPENSIVE, never mind the cost to scalp a ticket to WHL.)

Wow, this was awesome to wake up to.
Mad props to john for getting all these lurkers out in the open. Welcome everybody! I hope you all stick around. CFC is a great community and absolutely makes following this team more fun.
I played soccer my whole life but never really followed the game besides the occasional World Cup match. But when Germany ‘06 happened, I watched every single game and was hooked forever. I started watching every EPL game every weekend trying to absorb as much as I could and pick out a team to follow. It didn’t take long for that beautiful Bulgarian bastard and Spurs’ crazy you-can-score-three-cuz-we’ll-score-four style of play to steal my heart. COYS!

Been reading the CFC for like 6 months and its awesome! I’m from Singapore where majority of the people support the “Big Four” (which no longer exists) and in here, i never feel alone. COYS! been a spurs fan since they beat Chelski 2-1 for the league cup glory in 2008. I never gave up when we were rock bottom in the first 2 months of 2008-09 season and Harry did the Houdini and just turned things around. Proud to support the club with full of excitements.
Uncle Menno's "Introductory" Post
Seems a little strange doing one of these since I’m probably considered one of the main “regulars” here. But I dont’ think I ever did one, so I’ll tell my story.
Growing up I played YMCA youth league soccer and one year of JV ball in high school, but in all honesty? I suck. But I’ve always been a big international soccer fan and started following club-level soccer after spending a term in Costa Rica in college (¡Vamos Saprissa!). But I never really got into the EPL until a few years ago when I ran into one of my new neighbors sporting a United jersey. I commented on it and he in turn invited me to a weekly gathering of neighborhood dudes who get together weekly to watch DVRed EPL matches in my neighbor’s garage attic “man cave.”
We were all encouraged to pick an EPL team. How did I pick Spurs? I threw a dart at a map of London. (Just kidding)
Seriously, I did a lot of research before settling on Spurs. I chose Spurs because at the time they seemed a lot like my precious Pittsburgh Steelers — LOTS of history, titles in their past but not for a long time (admittedly this was just after the Stuhllrs won their first modern Superbowl so the analogy wasn’t perfect), a VERY passionate fanbase, and sweet-looking simple kits. I started watching just before Martin Jol got fired, and my early fandom was tested during the “2 points from 8 games phase.” In truth, it nearly drove me to Everton (who had Tim Howard). But I stuck it out, and am glad I did. Because I joined up when I did, I think I’m pretty safe from the “glory hunter” label. Nobody wanted to be a Spur supporter during that time.
I discovered this site about 18 months ago after hearing Kevin do an interview with Richard Farley on the EPL Talk podcast. The rest, as they say, is history. I’m a Spur for life.
I post here regularly and also participate in the Spurs Chicago Facebook group (O HAI GUISE). I also like Indiana Hoosiers basketball, the Steelers, and long walks in the rain.

I totally blanked in the post to say that it is equally as cool to have the regulars post their stories because most of the time it hasn’t been done either. And for the record I still rate you high enough to throw you out there in the Commentariat Football League matches. I’d still even put you up top actually. We have enough players here I’m sure to take down the WAGNT’s of the blogosphere!
I might not count as a regular due to my typical absence from the game threads (how do you guys do that? I watch afternoon games at the pub and morning games at home during which I actually do not sit down for the entire 90 minutes)…I feel motivated to tell my story too now though if only to connect with Uncle Menno over Hoosiers basketball.
I’ve liked soccer my whole life but never played very much and never took the time to follow the team (I was too hipster in high school and early college to watch sports). That all changed when I lived in Argentina for a year in 2008. It was right around the time Messi was becoming the freak that he is now (he still had a pony tail) and I got hooked watching Argentina’s world cup qualifiers with the family I was living with. I remember the first game I watched asking, “Who is that guy?” every time he was on the ball. I was working with teenagers in Argentina, so inevitably I played soccer a couple hours a day for the whole year and came back thoroughly obsessed. I spent the next two years following Argentina, Barcelona, and USMNT, but not watching as many games as I would’ve liked.
After the World Cup it became obvious that I needed to pick an EPL team. I toyed around with a few and watched 3 or 4 games a week until it became obvious that Tottenham Hotspur is beyond a shadow of a doubt the greatest club in England. That became especially clear when I watched Bale do his hat trick in Milan. I think that game was probably the point of no return for me although I had been leaning toward Spurs for a month or so. There isn’t a team that has the same spirit as Tottenham and I couldn’t imagine supporting anyone else. The club seems to live by the “to dare is to do” idea and the brilliant quotes about glory and failure, etc. So fun to support.
I still go back and watch the videos of Bale vs. Inter and feel pretty embarrassed about getting the chills and occasionally getting misty eyed. I’ve been following the team for a year and 3 months, how am I this obsessed? The closest I ever got to tearing up was when Modric celebrated with the crowd after the Liverpool goal.
Also, the recovering hipster in me wanted to follow a competitive team outside of the top 4. Also I’m a lifelong Cincinnati Reds fan so the idea of a team occasionally competing for top honors despite financial limitations feels really natural for me. Cincinnati’s not a team with no money but they also make it work from time to time without spending like the Yankees of the world. Tottenham’s ability to compete despite having a reasonable wage ceiling and a record transfer fee under 20 million pounds makes me love them even more.
I grew up in Southern Indiana and have lived in Bloomington for 3 years, so lots of love for Hoosiers basketball, Menno. I’m really holding out for a final four appearance so I can join in the inevitable rioting in downtown Bloomington. Apparently people were climbing on the courthouse and ziplining off on the telephone wires last time we made it that far.

I went to grad school there. I still scan for the teams results but following the Rebels is way more pointless than following Spurs. They put on a good tailgate, though.
Know I'm a day late
But been a Spurs fan since 04. Played CB my whole life and in college so watching Deadly Ledley made me go from 6 to midnight. From there it all fell into place. A few years ago I got into zonalmarking.net (if you don’t read it, start) and really delving into tactics, formations, etc. The way our boys have come together has been amazing and this season has been my favorite sports season of all time (saying something being a lifelong TB Rays fan). I currently work for the Columbus Crew so footy is my life. I’ve been reading CFC for about a year and thrown a comment or two in here over the last few months. Can’t wait to be here for the rest of this unbelievable ride. COYS!
I am also a day late.
I’ve been a member for a few months, I believe, but I’ve never had the chance to watch a game live and GDT with y’all. I do sometimes go back and read through it as I watch a rebroadcast hah. Hopefully I’ll be able to join for a match here soon!
I first really started watching soccer during the ‘02 WC, when the US made their run to the quarters. Interest fell off quite a bit afterwards, but would consistently watch US friendlies and qualifiers whenever I knew they were on (US/Mexico is a stop-down event). the ’06 WC was very, very disappointing, but I started understanding what made it so beautiful. The flow, build-up, passion, flair, skill, lack of commercials. Around the middle of ’07, I got an apartment with some buddies, and we all pitched in to get cable with all the sports channels. My roommate was a big ManU fan, and so as we watched games on FSW and played FIFA, I started kinda rooting for ManU (I know, terrible, but it was my first big step into the EPL.. I was stupid hah). In the beginning of ’08, we watched a Spurs/ManU game that was being aired on ESPN at WHL. While I was “rooting” for ManU, I absolutely fell in love with Spurs. I loved the way they played, loved their unis, loved WHL and how absolutely crazy the place went when Berbatov scored the first goal. It was absolutely addicting. I’ve been a full Spurs supporter ever since. I’m from Dallas, but now live in San Diego due to my service in the Military.. so my ability to see games are pretty limited to when they’re shown on FSC. If I’m working, I have to watch them delayed or from my DVR, but I try my best to see as many games as I can.

Been here a while but don't post very often
How I came to support Spurs was a bit unusual. When a young lad (I’m 64 now) my friends were talking about the teams they support and I wasn’t interested in football, later that day I said to my dad “What football team do we support?” and (thankfully) he said Spurs. From that day I’ve been a Spurs supporter even though I didn’t get really interested until much later. I’m pleased to say I belong to a family of Spurs supporters including my relations and the people they have married.
The first game I saw was when I was taken to WHL on Dec 3 1960 when Spurs drew with Burnley 4-4 after leading 4-0 at half time. Yes they messed up even with that team! I went to one other game against West Ham (I think the same season on Dec 24 a 2-0 win) and that was it for several years.
In the late 1960s I decided to watch the reserves play (I still don’t know why) at WHL as they did in those days and also youth and junior cup games. It was great to see players like Hoddle, Perryman and Hughton coming through the ranks and the sight of the late Jimmy Neighbour regularly playing with up to three players marking him usually unsuccessfully.
Then I ‘stepped up’ to first team games and basically went to any game played at WHL from junior schoolboys to first team. The great thing in those days is that it was relatively inexpensive to go in, I think the junior and youth team matches were often free.
Wonder if anyone remembers the ‘Goal Time’ tickets they used to sell? Each ticket had a time in minutes and seconds and if yours matched the time of one of the first three goals you won a cash prize. Third prize was £25. I’m sure of the third prize because Jimmy Pearce scored a cracker of a goal on the volley from a corner and when the time was announced my brother-in-law laughed and said that’s our ticket. So £12.50 each and it paid for my brother-in-laws season with cash over as he only went to first team games. That’s how cheap it was to go to football in those days!!!
I had the Spurs bug so much I used to cycle to the Cheshunt training ground during my annual leave to watch the players train. Steve Perryman is one of the politest people you will ever meet he had time for everyone, always stopping for autographs and photos. Never saw him refuse anyone.
Saw some great (and not so great) games including Europen matches, the arrival of Ardiles and Villa. Then for some reason in the late 70s I lost interest and stopped going, only recently getting a real interest back again but cannot see myself going again due to high cost involved, especially now I’m retired.

Bloody hell the fist time you went was 1960 we won the double in 1961.. wish you had sent this in before the new year i would have got you a ticket just for the good luck..
Thanks Bryan and Kevin. I was worried that I might have rambled a bit.
A few more memories have just sufaced:
THere was the match against Manchester United where Dennis Law and John Fitzpatrick suddenly started arguing with each other and you could see it turning nasty. Just as it was about to develop into a full blown brawl Alan Mullery saw what was happening and rushed in to part them. We were a little disappointed at the time as it was right in front of us and had a good view :-)
John Pratt being fouled by Allan Clarke of Leeds and admitting afterwards to going ‘looking for him’ during the match but Clarke’s team mates basically telling Pratt to take his time or the ref will know it’s revenge.
And perhaps the best…..
I was fortunate enough to see what Bill Nicholson said was Jimmy Greaves’ greatest goal scored against Leicester City in October 1968. As I remember it Pat Jenning did a long kick out towards the wing about half-way into the opposing half maybe more where Greavesy was, he looked up, let the ball come over his shoulder, somehow trapped the ball on his boot and spun round towards the touchline doing over a half circle with the ball still in place. By now he was facing towards his own goal, not bad you might think but being Greavsie he ‘danced’ across the field leaving two or three defenders sprawled on the floor, went round a couple more including the referee, drew Shilton and fired the ball into the net. The crowd went wild and so did I – I was usually fairly calm but on this occasion I was jumping up and down, arms stretched out above my head clapping like mad and yelling my head off…..and sadly not one TV camera in sight though I do remember seeing a photo with several players on the floor.
Bill Nicholson OBE it should have been Sir Bill Nicholson and I mean that sincerely.

Been semi-lurking for a few months now
Joined CFC/SBN in May but I’ve been following the Spurs since the 2008 campaign.
I picked Tottenham because two of my friends from my college suite who were Scum supporters (they had scarves and jerseys hanging on their walls) and another member of the suite who was a die-hard Chelsea supporter got me hooked on following/watching soccer and I soon felt the need to pick a team to support. Not wanting to support either of the aforementioned clubs, nor any other members of the big 4, Spurs seemed like the best choice. It didn’t hurt that they were my club of choice when playing FIFA. Tottenham’s partnership with the San Jose Earthquakes sealed the deal for me (I had supported the Earthquakes since they were known as the Clash and I live 15 minutes away from their home ground).
It was tough in the early going with the 2 points from 8 games ordeal, but then ‘Arry came in and the rest is history. The 2009 campaign was magical — I’ll never forget skipping class on a Wednesday to stay home and watch the North London Derby and seeing Danny Rose’s volley; the battle for 4th place against Manchester City was glorious as well.
Love this blog, it’s been an invaluable source of knowledge and entertainment, cheers.
COYS!!!
2 points from 8 was tough
but really glad I made it through that. It was the sort of test I needed to really know that I was for Spurs, come hell or high water.
Well I’m definitely not a lurker, I just started following Totteham this week (lol)
But I do plan or starting to listen to the podcasts and read all these front page stories, especially the Hoddle of Coffee, in order to learn what and who I’m watching when I watch it.

Daring and now Doing
Hey guys, just wanted to introduce myself real quick. I’m Amaan, and ive become a relatively recent Spurs fan after following Inter for around three years. Live in the bay area and a huge SF team guy (NINERS BABY). I usually read up on the Sf Giants blog McCoveyChronicles often which is pretty simliar to CFC in its witty banter. Also go to school at UC Davis up near Sacramento at the moment. Regardless this blog seems super chill and laid back, exactly what i look for. Hopefully i’ll be able to contribute some!
I am not quite a lurker
but I don’t get to comment nearly as often as I like thanks to my wonderful food service job (yey college!).
Moved to Denver 7 years ago, been an avid Rockies, Broncos, Clippers (don’t ask) and Avs fan since before that. Also A CU Buffs fan, which may or may not be because I currently attend class at that particular school. Possibly.
I tried out certain teams for a while when I was first getting into this great sport (Bill Simmons style); at first, I liked Newcastle, because they were funny and reminded me of the 2000s Broncos: lots of talent, but zero confidence. I stopped following them after a few months when they got relegated, then I tried out Liverpool for a couple months before Tottenham utterly stole my heart away. They had something that neither Newcastle nor Liverpool have had for a while: hope, which is an essential part of the heartbreak I was so accustomed to with my other teams. I had found my team.
Needless to say, I was shocked (and, in a way, disappointed) when the Lilywhites proceeded to get 4th place, and continue to be surprised as this team that I fell for fully expecting them to let me down has continued to exceed my wildest expectations.
That said, I will be sticking around even if we go back to being a mid-table side. I just couldn’t feel right cheering for anyone else; Spurs are the team for me, and this blog is awesome. If I ever get gamedays off, I shall try to comment here more often. Cheers, and COYS

A little late
I finally signed up. I’m a third generation Tottenham fan (my mom was born and raised in England, most of my family lives I’m England.) I’m the only Tottenham fan at my high school. I am a stat nerd. Happy to have joined a great community.

Sorry for the tardiness
Haven’t had much access to the blog this week due to travel, but still wanna join the mass de-lurking.
Where to begin? I first became interested in Spurs during the late 80s, the Gazza and Lineker teams. Back then it wasn’t so easy to follow English football outside of Europe so I would only read the scant coverage in the newspapers. As satellite TV and the internets became more widespread, I was able to start watching some games during the 90s. Suffered through the Ossie months and was disappointed when the Sheringham, Anderton, Klinsmann axis didn’t quite work out. My interest slacked a bit afterwards until Robbie Keane inaugurated the Elland Rd-White Hart Lane express. Been pretty addicted since then, and lurking CFC since near the launch.
Otherwise, I’m your average Georgetown Hoyas/Washington Nationals/DC United/Washington Capitals fan. Funnily enough, the only time I’ve ever been able to watch a Spurs game live is when they visited RFK to play my beloved DC United (only team with the United moniker I could ever support).
If I recall correctly, Jamie Redknapp played for Spurs that day, as well as Kasey Keller, Ziege, Shearingham and Robbie Keane. DC had a pretty solid team with El Diablo Etcheverry, John Harkes, Ben Olsen, Stoitchkov, Bobby Convey and Earnie Stewart. And of course, who can ever forget Ray Hudson!
COYS! The title is up for grabs!!!
After that last, unholy row,
I never, ever play, basketball now.
It joins a list of things I'll miss like fencing foils and lovely girls I'll never kiss.
Les Boulez
some would call them. They should move back to Bawlmer if u ask me (tho it’s DC United who might end up there).
Btw, I just found a great article on SI.com about that DC United-Spurs game back in ’03. I actually did not remember that a much younger, cartilage-laden Ledley King started for Spurs that day.

Oh if only
Baltimore can really only support 2 major teams with DC and Philly squeezing the city’s exurbs out of the market. I think if the Bullets had never moved we would have kept supporting them, but you wouldn’t be able to slot a team in today with a team in DC. If we had a better arena maybe an ABA team could thrive here, so maybe there IS a market for the Wiz in Charm City! (HEYOOOOO)
That said, we do have one of the nation’s five remaining Indoor Soccer teams! C’MON YOU BALTIMORE BLASTS!!!!
O's, Ravens, and Spurs
Can I still play?
I grew up in Chicago as a die hard sports fan, but aside from the World Cup I always dismissed soccer. I mocked it and I ignored it and I found myself completely baffled by its appeal despite the fact that deep down I was fascinated by its global, intertwined structure and knew eventually I was going to have to force myself to give it a shot. That day came when I moved into my fraternity house as a college freshman last year and found that there were a ton of soccer fans in my house. The Fox Soccer-watching and the FIFA 11-playing got me hooked. After educating myself on the game and playing FIFA with random teams I played one with Spurs and won something like 7-1. I decided that that was my new FIFA team. Two weeks later I got home from class and found my roommates watching the 3-3 arsenal draw on ESPN2. I found myself rooting pretty passionately for my real life favorite FIFA team, and the rest is history.
Rooting from Columbia, Missouri, COYS
People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.
Mizzou fans are always welcome on this site.
