Mario Balotelli Charged With Violent Conduct

Photo

I know it's ancient history, but do you guys recall that controversial moment in yesterday's match, wherein Manchester City forward Mario Balotelli intentionally stomped on Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Scott Parker's head, only to not get thrown off the pitch and proceed to score the game winning penalty?

Ok, enough wallowing in how horrible that was, the important thing is to examine the consequences of that action. Those consequences are a four match ban, turning to five if he files a (what will probably be) frivolous appeal. This means Balotelli will miss the Carling Cup semifinal (unless he appeals) and matches against Everton, Fulham, and Aston Villa. He could also miss the Carling Cup final if he decides to appeal. While this ruling won't take the points gained from the match away, at least it won't go unpunished. Some readers had feared yesterday that Howard Web would claim to have seen the incident in his report of the match, thus disallowing the FA from further punishing Balotelli. This was not the case, as Webb admitted he missed the incident.

The FA has also confirmed that Joleon Lescott's elbow to the face of Younes Kaboul will not be reprimanded. Balotelli has until 6pm on Wednesday to appeal.

FA agrees Balotelli shouldn't have been on the pitch yesterday when Balotelli earned & scored game winning penalty. Spurs still lose.

“But like, you totally shouldn’t have. Does that help? No? Here, how about this. He won’t get to play against Liverpool instead. Happy? "

Its the one thing about sport that just drives me absolutely crazy. I get why they wouldnt give that power to themselves (way to much temptation to fix games etc.)

Two questions out of curiosity

1. What would have been Balotelli’s punishment if he was shown a straight Red after already having one yellow? A longer suspension?

2. Would it have been within the FA’s authority to negate his game winning penalty and declare the match a draw?

by barrydancer on Jan 23, 2012 7:42 PM GMT reply actions

1. No. Still just a red.
2. Nope. The FA can’t actually do anything that helps anyone with anything.

by Lennon's Eyebrow on Jan 23, 2012 7:44 PM GMT up reply actions

at least it won't go unpunished like some of us feared yesterday after Howard Webb admitted to the FA that he missed the incident during the run of the game

really? you should understand the regulations a little bit better if you are to blog on it! this was the ONLY reason the FA could have acted. If Webb HAD seen it then the FA couldn’t have handed out any punishment.

by Jules77 on Jan 23, 2012 7:46 PM GMT reply actions

mmmm

sorry, maybe this is what you are trying to say, but with poor grammar/sentence structure ;)

by Jules77 on Jan 23, 2012 7:48 PM GMT up reply actions

I think that's exactly what he's saying.

The sentence should read synonymous with “at least it won’t go unpunished BECAUSE Howard Webb admitted not seeing it.” Follow?

by Lennon's Eyebrow on Jan 23, 2012 7:48 PM GMT up reply actions

Um, thats just what Nick said.

Yesterday we thought Webb might have actually seen it and the FA was powerless. Today Webb admits he didn’t see it, so the FA acts.

Stomp to the face → Red.
Elbow to the face → Not a red.

crazy

i’d like to hear their reasons why they didn’t charge Lescott. disgraceful.

by Jules77 on Jan 23, 2012 7:57 PM GMT up reply actions

It's odd

Because I thought the elbow was actually more malicious. The stomp was kind of half assed and just Balotelli being Balotelli. But the elbow was aimed and was way worse

Generally speaking a head stomp is more dangerous than an elbow. As a result stomping is taking very seriously, elbows not as much.

by rubbercarp on Jan 23, 2012 8:42 PM GMT up reply actions

well

“Balotelli being Balotelli” doesn’t make it okay. The stomp wasn’t half assed, it was malicious and it’s intent was to injure. Was Lescott trying to injure? Balotelli was frustrated with Scott and he intended to treat his frustration the way all children do.

Oh, don't get me wrong

It was really bad. Just saying the damage inflicted was half assed

Tin Foil Hat thinking

Occam’s Razor is that the FA is just incompetent.

by ChadUESSpurs on Jan 23, 2012 8:39 PM GMT up reply actions

While its still stupid

My guess would be they ruled that they elbow wasn’t as malicious (probably wasn’t) and unintentional (maybe, but it was certainly reckless).

Wow

Spain’s federation does nothing about Pepe. Congratulations, England. You’re less shitty than Spain at something, even if it’s not football.

by Lennon's Eyebrow on Jan 23, 2012 8:13 PM GMT reply actions

Well, I agree with the federation on that...

I’m still not convinced that Pepe’s step was intentional

Can’t say the same for Balotelli, though

by The Sleeping Chicken on Jan 23, 2012 8:29 PM GMT up reply actions

Not a surprise though

For all the FA’s incompetence and stupidity, they still aren’t nearly as toothless as the Spanish FA, which seemingly only exists to ignore competitive imbalance and turn the national team into a traveling circus.

That should take care of it. That was a pussy move by Lescott.

Yeah

That would be a pretty effective deterrent punishment

Doesn’t make me feel better. I always find it silly when people go in afterwards and suspended people for something. It is miscast as a solution to what happened.

by johnf34 on Jan 23, 2012 8:40 PM GMT reply actions

I don't mind it

Referees are human and are going to miss stuff. Its good that players know they won’t entirely get away with something as long as the Ref isn’t looking.

Its just infuriating that it involved a player who scored the game winner. There’s no conjecture here about whether or not that decision had a major impact on the game. It plainly did.

by Skipjack on Jan 23, 2012 8:42 PM GMT up reply actions

It’s still not the solution. There should be some benefit to the team who was wronged and some punishment for the team who wronged.

I think it’s silly that a bunch of teams who have a team with somebody suspended on the upcoming schedule should profit from these things. Ridiculous challenges/tackles should be seen immediately by a booth upstairs (like while he was on the ground for a bit) and something should be done.

by johnf34 on Jan 23, 2012 8:49 PM GMT up reply actions

Ok, great, suspended after the fact

Doesn’t change a thing, and doesn’t make the loss sting any less. I’m pissed off more now because Lescott gets away with an intentional elbow to the face of Kaboul. Don’t feel sorry for the bastards by only suspending one of their players. GOSH FREAKING DAMN IT!

My thoughts are like Brian Cushing on the field: Everywhere.

Except it’s twitter, and therefore witty and sarcastic thanks to the hashtag. I appreciate it in this context, but it’s generally misused and often turns into dumb stuff like #stuffwhitepeoplesay #stuffblackpeopledo #randomthought and it’s no longer fun and witty.

sin bin would only really be affective for yellow cards

I also really don’t think it would be a great introduction to football. Yes bad tackles happen and sometimes players get of lightly with a yellow. That has to be reviewed with referees board and how the review certain incidents. I hope that refs go through certain incidents and review the situation as a collective body. In doing so, creating a reference for similar future incidents ( I know nothing substantial in this subject )
Also..Can you imagine what would happen if a goalie got a yellow and had go to sin bin for 10 minutes? What would say Harry do..Put daws or Younes in goal or even Ade??? Yes the player would be back but it would destroy the game for those minutes. Maybe deserving in some incidents but WOAH I think Mario needs more than that. I think he needs a massive culture shock. This would allow him to appreciate his situation as he’s a massive, spoilt, upstart shit!!!!
