Scottish Football Still A Thing, Spurs Kind Of Care
Apparently Scottish football is still a thing. You could have fooled me. You could have fooled a lot of people, but it still is a thing and there's this kid by the name of James Forrest at Celtic that is supposedly halfway decent. Tottenham Hotspur have even shown interest in him, although Harry Redknapp was quick to squash any rumors of Spurs having bid for him.
"He’s a good player but we’ve not made any bids," Redknapp said. "If we did, I would speak to Neil Lennon. He’s a player we’ve had watched but he belongs to Celtic."
As far as Scottish football goes, Forrest is kind of a big deal. He's a star for the Scotland youth internationals and at 21 years old, he already has made a handful of appearances for the senior team. He's a winger and he's small at just 5-foot-7. That is the extent of my knowledge of him because, let's be serious now. No one watches Scottish football when there is pretty much any other football in the world going on.
P.S.- I know that quote is coming from the Mail, but I don't think even the Mail would completely fabricate quotes so let's go ahead and work under the assumption that Harry said it. You know, much in the same way we're working under the assumption that Scottish football is still a thing (*ducking from the Hearts supporters*).

Typical English Hypocrisy
When you consider that eight of the current Premiership Managers served their football apprenticeships in Scottish Football. A further two played there and another was a successful manager and the countless number of Scots currently playing in the English Championship.your comments lack subtstance.
As a football fan I take an interest in most leagues the fact that you know so little (and are so proud about your lack of knowledge) about James Forrest reflects badly on you.
by Look to the future on Jan 23, 2012 7:43 PM GMT reply actions
You haven't been watching much Scottish football.
Celtic and Rangers 24 and 20 points clear at the top of the table? Hearts so far in debt they can barely pay their players? Scottish football is a mess and the quality of the league is not good. Even the Old Firm are not as good as they used to be.
Scotland now have the 18th ranked league in the world. Behind such noted football powerhouses as Cyprus, Israel, and Austria.
Your argument that manager started or played there could also be said for League One or the Championship, but that doesn’t make the football played there any better.

Without a doubt, Scottish football is currently in a helluva rut.
But it’s stupid and ignorant to ignore teams that were beating the likes of AC Milan, Lyon, and Manchester United just a few years ago.
by Nick88 on Jan 23, 2012 8:06 PM GMT via mobile up reply actions
Ignorance isn't always bliss!
Scottish football is, undoubtedly, going through a bad time at the moment, no-one would deny that. It would be difficult for any country who’s neighbours have such artificially bloated finances. However, to dismiss a league which contains the 9th (Celtic) and 15th Rangers) best supported teams in Europe (when the population of the entire country is a mere 5 million) shows a level of both arrogance and ignorance that leaves me astounded.
English football, in it’s current state, is built almost entirely on Sky TV money. How do you think the EPL teams would do if they had to survive on gate money and £2 million p/a from TV, rather than the tens of millions of pounds they get now? Sky and the EPL is something of a self-fulfilling prophecy but all bubbles burst at some point.
By the way, Hearts are in debt but their players weren’t paid because the club’s lunatic owner chose not to pay them.
Oh, and by the way again, there are 18 points between 1st and 5th place teams in the EPL. Not too healthy a situation for The Best (but everyone knows it’s second best to La Liga) League In The World, eh?

By the way
There’s a 21-point gap between 1st and 5th in Spain.
By the way again, Valencia (currently sitting in 3rd in Spain) have a goal differential of +9. Barcelona (who currently lead La Liga) have a goal differential of +49. That’s a 40 goal difference between first and third.
Oh, and by the way again, you’re wrong.

@theroosevelts – Cheers :o)
@johnf34 – Cliche time. It’s all about opinions.
@Nick Petrilli – “God you’re dense”? Is that directed at me? If so, please explain. If not, please ignore.
@Skipjack – Where’s the irony? (lolz (yawn))
@Brendan Darr – The only reason I brought up the points gap in the EPL was because of Bryan Ashlock’s comment. He gave the impression that he thought such a gap was an indicator of a poor league.
“Oh, and by the way again, you’re wrong” About what?

I don't think a 2 team league can be the best in Europe
Yes, only 2 teams (probably) are in it for England, but there are at least 3 other teams that could compete next year and Spurs aren’t nearly as far out as for their challenge to be unrealistic.
Next year there will be at least 4 teams with a halfway decent shot at the Premier League title. The only way the title race expands in Spain is if a comet hits Barcelona or Madrid

I see where you were going, but...
I had this long winded explanation, but I’ll just leave it at this: Two months ago, as many as 7 teams (“sky six” plus Newcastle) had a realistic shot at the top two. We are left with two teams at the top, and two within serious striking distance. In Spain, a team hasn’t finished within single digits of the top-two since ’08-09.
England is more competitive. That’s the point I was trying to make.

Not directed at Willow, but rather a general comment regarding this thread and the tone around here from time to time. When did we get so glib and dismissive of contrasting opinions on this site? I’ve been noticing it more and more recently, and have found it a bit weird. Not that the OP was super friendly in his tone, but I’d just rather not see first time posters torn down for disagreeing with the consensus of this site (be it that the SPL is terrible or one of the various other topics that the commentariat is so universally certain of). One of the reasons I started posting here was that people seemed to be pretty welcoming and the tone was fun. The tone stops being fun when the fun becomes so insular.

Fair point
The pleasant nature of the community is a big plus of this site. I would imagine we’re super cranky about yesterday and throwing YNWA is never a good way to make friends here.
Ah. I think we all need to chill out after yesterday. That ish got ugly up in here.

If you’re a Pool fan coming in here to troll, expect to get mocked. Dropping a YNWA is a bit different than “You said my favorite league sucks AND said that you don’t know a damn thing about it, I don’t like that and here’s why.” I’m all for good-natured ribbing between fans, but the snarky “Nuh-uh, you’re super wrong” stuff just bothers me. Again, not directed at any one person, I’ve just been seeing it more often recently and I don’t think it’s what we’re about around here.

Actually
The Old Firm matches between Celtic and Rangers are pretty good football and there’s always great atmosphere. I guess the English just treat Scotland like America treats Canada, with gentle indifference.
Seriously Canada.

SPL can bounce back
Aberdeen, Motherwell, Inverness and Hearts need to get better, though, to make the competition more compelling. I don’t hold out much hope for Partick Thistle, though, sadly.
Scottish Football is a stepping stone
Of course Scottish football is a stepping stone to the bigger leagues it always has been. One can think of Alex James, Jimmy Deleaney. Scottish players have added to English Football throughout the years.
Your comments about Scottish football are probably true but my comment was not about the level of football either in Scotland or in England.

Both sides are right.
Celtic season ticket holder here. (Tottenham’s my favourite EPL team) The SPL is in a huge problem just now, and one of the main problems is that, while previously our young ‘stars’ left at 23/24 (Steven Fletcher, Aiden McGeady, James McFadden etc) they now leave at 16/17/18 and ruin their career when they should be learning their trade up here, the most recent examples being Scott Allan to West Brom at 17, and (most heartbreaking for Sellik fans) Islam Feruz to Chelsea at 15. (And we all know that their youth system is basically a black hole of destruction.) Also, we aren’t spending any money (Hearts have no money, Rangers have no money and Celtic’s chairman refuses to spend more than £4 million on a player despite the fact that we’re the 6th richest club in Britain). It’s no wonder the SPL is in the state it’s in. (Although we’re trying to copy the Dutch youth system, so hopefully it won’t be in the state it’s in for too long)
However many recent average players have left the SPL and been a success in the EPL or championship. Charlie Adam was a Rangers reject. John Ruddy was Motherwell’s third choice keeper before he moved to Norwich. The SPL produces many decent players, just as many small leagues do, they just leave before they should.
In regards to James Forrest, he’s probably the best player in the SPL just now and has the potential to be our best youth product since the previously-said McGeady, even Paul McStay! (maybe a bit far) but at this age he’d be nothing more than a squad player for Spurs. Keeping him at Celtic for 2-3 years would be beneficial to both teams. However I think he’d fit in really well with Spurs’ pass-and-move playing style, as it’s similar to how Celtic like to play (when not in gail force winds playing on what is effectively a plough field.) However, he’s too young, and wouldn’t put anyone out the Spurs team, at this point.
Thanks Kieran
That all sounds reasonable. If Spurs do go for him hopefully it’s with a deal to loan him back to Celtic for a year.
On a complete tangent, despite the logistical problems, I’m more and more in favor of Scotland, Holland, Belgium and maybe Scandinavia trying to create some kind of oft discussed Atlantic League. Television, not local support, is the problem for these leagues competing with the big 4 and I think a larger league is the only way clubs like Ajax and Rangers and Celtic and Anderlecht are going to ever be able to get a decent tv rights package.

But would fans in Belgium
Pay to see their teams play SPL teams? And vice versa regarding all of them? Mashing together so many teams could create exposure, but it could also just dilute fan experience by having their teams play games they don’t care about. Plus, the national FAs would never agree to it.

That's a good question
My instinct is that they would appreciate seeing a higher quality of play and the ability to hang on to more of their good, young players. The problem in Scotland now is there are only 3 games a year anyone cares about. I’m not sure the FA’s would automatically be against a multi-country first division, either. Celtic and Rangers would jump at the chance to play in the EPL. I’m not 100% sold on my own idea, even, but I don’t think it’s deniable that Celtic, Rangers and Ajax, etc. have declined and that the clubs and their respective FA’s need to face the realization of that and become more creative about solutions. Euro football is way more interesting when these clubs are strong and challenging in Europe.

English/Scotish Football Tickets
This years FA Cup Final is being contested by two teams in blue, namely Everton and Chelsea Tickets. Everton are one of the oldest names in world football and are founder members of the football league (1888) and the Premiership (1992), while Chelsea have recently come into prominence thanks to the billions of a Russian owner. With two very popular clubs, comes the problem of finding tickets for the FA Cup final.
