Manchester City Vs. Tottenham Hotspur, 2012 Premier League: Match Report

Ledley King is an idiot. Jermain Defoe should have scored. Neither of those things would have happened if Howard Webb saw this.

Bale should have played that ball wayyyy earlier and let Defoe go 1 on 1 with Hart.

That said, we lost the game because of an awful decision by King. There was no guarantee that Balotelli would turn that opportunity into a goal. A devastating loss, for sure.

by The Sleeping Chicken on Jan 22, 2012 3:54 PM GMT up reply actions

No blame on either. Both did well. Both had good second halves.

The goal was just 3 inches from happening. At full speed that’s nothing. Well played both of them.

by AWolfAtTheDoor on Jan 22, 2012 3:59 PM GMT up reply actions

I don’t know, I feel like Bale made the decision which put pressure on his crossing ability as opposed to putting the pressure on Defoe to finish past Hart. I don’t think I fault Bale for that.

I do

Because Defoe beating Hart is more likely than the cross working

I can’t fault Defoe for being 5’6. I can fault Bale just a bit for playing it like 0.3 seconds too late.

by johnf34 on Jan 22, 2012 4:24 PM GMT up reply actions

the issue isn’t the .3 seconds, its whether Bale should have played it “much” earlier so that Defoe could gather at his feet and then shoot 1 v 1 with Hart. Clearly the way Bale elected to go he set himself up for a difficult cross that he couldn’t quite pull off.

Nick’s of the opinion that earlier is obv better. Im not so sure because I can’t quite mentally construct the angle defoe has in that circumstance, but i do know that Hart is really really good in those situations. So meh.

Shorter Me: Scoring goals is haaaaaaaaaard.

I just think Bale had an opportunity for an early through pass

And could have played Defoe onto it. Of course, knowing my luck, if he had done that he would have overshot it and passed it too far and given it to Hart

Windy on twitter was saying that Bale elected to take the keeper one on one out of it.

Bale just wanted to let Defoe get a tap in. Possibly his thinking possibly not. But Windy also said that Defoe hesitated a bit in the run in, and if Defoe had run straight to the far post, he would have been there. That’s probably a product of lack of playing time with the rest of the squad. Bale and Defoe just weren’t on the same page, and that cost us the .3 seconds.

by AWolfAtTheDoor on Jan 22, 2012 4:34 PM GMT up reply actions

That sounds pretty freaking accurate. Windy!

by johnf34 on Jan 22, 2012 4:35 PM GMT up reply actions

Sounds right

He hesitated for the pass, and as a result wasn’t there for the cross.

You can't call Ledley an idiot

when you probably couldn’t have done any better than him were you in his boots

by Aslan the Melon on Jan 22, 2012 3:54 PM GMT via iPhone app reply actions

Not that I agree with calling King an idiot...

But this line of reasoning makes no sense. So nobody in the world can criticize footballers other than footballers themselves?

by The Sleeping Chicken on Jan 22, 2012 3:56 PM GMT up reply actions

Think about it

You can criticise a Fernando Torres vs Man U miss because anyone could have scored there. But this was a much harder decision to make and not many defenders would have made the right decision

by Aslan the Melon on Jan 22, 2012 3:58 PM GMT via iPhone app up reply actions

I'm sorry, that's wrong.

It’s an easy decision not to tackle there.

King drags him down by the shoulder.

If he just stays shoulder to shoulder with him and actually plays defense we don’t have this problem.

Editor of SBNation's Tottenham Hotspur blog: Cartilage Free Captain

by Bryan Ashlock on Jan 22, 2012 4:02 PM GMT up reply actions

And actually, Kev probably could have done better in that situation.

All Ledley has to do there is not make that tackle. I think most of us are capable of not tackling someone.

Like I said before

there’s no guarantee Balotelli would have scored. He wasn’t even straight on.

Let’s end this ridiculous conversation on this note: If that was Bassong who had made that tackle, you would have been calling him an idiot too. Just because King made the tackle doesn’t make it any less stupid.

by Aslan the Melon on Jan 22, 2012 4:09 PM GMT via iPhone app up reply actions

1. Yes, you could call it kneejerk

2. It was idiotic
3. Saying he shouldn’t start is not stupid when he is not a clear cut above Dawson

Yes, I agree it was idiotic

But he is not an idiot for one mistake.

And can you say with 100% certainty that Dawson would have done better there. Because while Daws may be more athletic, his decision making is no where near Ledley’s, and one mistake doesn’t change that

by Aslan the Melon on Jan 22, 2012 4:15 PM GMT via iPhone app up reply actions

I don't necessarily disagree with 3

but given that we’ve never heard it before today, you can understand why some would consider it kneejerk

Dawson

I’m more negative on Dawson than most people here seem to be. But to me this mistake only changes the pecking order if you think its hugely indicative of things to come from King. Personally I’m gonna need to see another shaky performance or three from him before I’d make the switch. Although with all of them healthy a little rotation (lol) would be fine.

by ahowie on Jan 22, 2012 4:37 PM GMT up reply actions

None actually

Webb pretty clearly saw that incident and it will be mentioned in the match report. The FA won’t be able to do anything at that point.

by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 22, 2012 4:22 PM GMT up reply actions

The angle they showed on Sky Sports after the game made it look like Webb looked away at the wrong time

He only would have been able to catch it out of the corner of his eye. Or at least that’s what it looked like. I don’t know what the match report will say.

by AWolfAtTheDoor on Jan 22, 2012 4:23 PM GMT up reply actions

In fairness

It really didn’t look nearly as bad in full speed after Balotelli started to fall. It looks horrible when it’s slowed down, but Howard Webb doesn’t have that luxury.

by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 22, 2012 4:28 PM GMT up reply actions

Since when?

I always thought Howard Webb had slow-mo vision!

by Aslan the Melon on Jan 22, 2012 4:31 PM GMT via iPhone app up reply actions

Sorry I wasn't implying he will lie with "I don't know what the match report will say."

I’m sure he’ll tell the truth. Like Stephen said it’s a hard decision to make in real time. The FA will make the right decision I’m sure

by AWolfAtTheDoor on Jan 22, 2012 4:29 PM GMT up reply actions

Assuming they can

If Webb mentions seeing it at all their ridiculous rules don’t even let them look at it

by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 22, 2012 4:30 PM GMT up reply actions

Well I meant the right decision as governed by their rules.

If there’s no Balotelli ban, then it’s not going to be because Webb and the FA are against us. It’ll be because of some silly rule.

by AWolfAtTheDoor on Jan 22, 2012 4:36 PM GMT up reply actions

Yeah, that's the thing

I’m guessing that Webb will say he saw it, and I’m guessing the FA will be able to do nothing about it, which will be quite convenient for both since neither particularly wants to own up to mistakes being made

by Joamiq on Jan 22, 2012 4:36 PM GMT up reply actions

If he says he saw the incident and believes it didn't merrit a booking

He will be given a poor referee grade. I guarantee he says he couldn’t see it and if he did he would have sent him off. My bet is Balotelli gets 4 games.

by BJ the Bossman on Jan 23, 2012 3:37 PM GMT up reply actions

From The Guardian match report:

Balotelli lucky boy update: Absolute consensus in the Sky studio that Balotelli should have been sent off. “If he deems this not a sending-off,” says Graeme Souness of Howard Webb, “he shouldn’t be refereeing football matches let alone World Cup finals.” If Webb saw it and didn’t send him off, he’s a useless referee. If he didn’t see it, Balotelli should get a massive FA ban. We’ll see.

by barrydancer on Jan 22, 2012 4:10 PM GMT reply actions

I don’t care that much if he gets a ban. We don’t play them soon.

by johnf34 on Jan 22, 2012 4:19 PM GMT up reply actions

Hahaha. Yea, that’s why I don’t care if he gets a ban. It doesn’t matter if he gets one and they play other teams because they have enough cover I think.

Totally agree

Seriously surprised at some of the reactions on here.

Honestly, Kevin has been one of the one Spurs fans whose opinions I’ve actually valued and looked forward to hearing but after that reaction towards King today I’m totally disappointed.

It was a shit tackle, everyone can agree on that. To say King is past it or even on notice is possible the most retarded thing in the world. Yes he is getting old, is he past it? Not even close. He is still our best centre half, a bit of perspective would be nice.

We lost (marginally) to the best team in the league. This shit was not handed out when we lost to Stoke, wind your necks in

Champions League

Blew our chance for the League Title today, IMHO. Still in it for the cup. We need to retrench for the top four now. That’s what Arry’s said all along. Now we’ll be less distracted by keeping-up with the big boys. We’re close tho. Maybe this’ll Spur Levy into buying us a striker? What’s done is done. Time to look for the positives lads!

by cap'n hack on Jan 22, 2012 6:41 PM GMT up reply actions

I don't understand the blame placing going on here.

I thought Spurs played a tough game and a loss is a harsh result given their performance. They dominated possession the first half and for large stretches of the second half. They came back from TWO GOALS DOWN – IN MANCHESTER – to tie the game on a wonderstrike from Gareth Bale. Had Defoe scored on that counter in the last 2 minutes, I would have considered Spurs fortunate to have come away with the 3 points. A draw felt like the fairest result given the two teams performances. Only we lost. And this loss hurts more because of the way we lost it, and because I feel like we were deserving of the point. And let’s not forget we were playing the top team in the EPL away, and still put in a hell of a performance.

I’m hoping Harry can use us being hard done in this game to inspire the team and give them more confidence, because in the match I watched, we were every bit as good as Manchester City today.

by Jellyfeast on Jan 22, 2012 7:17 PM GMT reply actions

That's right

I got up at 5:30 am only to get my heart crushed. But this should be a passing moment.

We kept up with the best in the league and could’ve nicked it in their own stadium at the end. We’re still in the hunt for the top spot and, in any case if we keep playing the way we do, it’s hard to see us finishing below 3rd. CL glory here we come, and we will attract world-class players.

There is still room to go up from here. Cheer up. The looks on the squad at the end said it all. This team has serious ambitions.

by ProfByDay on Jan 22, 2012 11:34 PM GMT reply actions

Even though I love him . . .

I shouted at BAE when he didn’t let the ball roll out of play for a Spurs throw.

Instead, he promptly dragged the ball back, and fired a hopeless long ball up the field, straight back to City, who then promptly sent the ball up to Ballotelli, and then the penalty.

Its the last minute of the game, 2-2 away at City . . . KEEP.THE.FUCKING.BALL!!!!!!!11

I thought the lads put in a great effort, but its little things like that, that separate ‘Title Winners’ from ‘Also Rans’. Fundamental mistake, putting pressure back on the defence.
