Manchester City Vs. Tottenham Hotspur, 2012 Premier League: Preview, So Much For The Top Of The Table Battle

With so many top players missing things could get ugly at Eastlands

This was supposed to be a battle for the top spot in the English Premier League. The favorites Manchester City and their high-priced talent hosting plucky Tottenham Hotspur, the team no one expected to be in the title race. Spurs only three points back and looking to make their intentions as title contenders clear by toppling the giant and moving level with them, while also adding a bit of revenge after being embarrassed by the Citizens 5-1 early in the season. It was set up to be a dream match-up at Etihad Stadium and nothing was going to stop it, only Spurs did manage to stop it. They went out and drew with Wolves (WOLVES!) at home (AT HOME!), ruining the top of the table drama.

What was once a match with an angle for even the laziest of writers is now a match that the laziest of writers (right here) have to delve into the "what if" for an angle. For example, what if Spurs didn't draw against Wolves and a Spurs win would put them even with the Citizens atop the Premier League table then. How great would this be then? Correct answer: the greatest.

Star-divide

Instead of THE GREATEST MATCH EVER! what are we left with? A lot of absences. Emmanuel Adebayor is out for Spurs because he's a City loanee. City will be without Africa Cup of Nations participants Yaya Toure and Kolo Toure and Vincent Kompany is out due to suspension. Mario Balotelli is also battling an injury, further weakening the Citizens, while Tottenham have doubts about Ledley King and Sandro, both of whom could return this weekend depending on whose reports you believe.

The absences leave both teams with major questions to answer and they won't be answered until the referee blows the opening whistle. Exactly what formation Spurs play remains a question. Without Adebayor, do they dare playing Jermain Defoe as a lone striker with Rafael van der Vaart underneath him or the even more scary option, Roman Pavlyuchenko? Do they play the two together, sitting Aaron Lennon most likely and pushing van der Vaart out wide? All are options and with Harry Redknapp you never know quite what they will do.

The player choices aren't nearly as complicated for City manager Roberto Mancini. Some combination of Nigel de Jong, Gareth Barry and James Milner will be in the center of the pitch and Joleon Lescott and Stefan Savic will team in the center of defense. Beyond that, the team will be largely the same as it has been all season, but the question is how they battle in the center without Yaya.

Yaya is the unquestioned leader in the midfielder and without him and, especially his range, there's a crack in the Citizens. Against a team like Spurs who leads the Premier League in both possession and pass percentage, Yaya's absence can really be exposed because as good as Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko and Balotelli are, they have had stretches where they have been starved of service and their talents wasted. Even if King is a go for Spurs, tracking the City strikers and David Silva for 90 minutes is a losing battle, but if they can be starved of service then Tottenham have a fighting chance.

How Spurs approach the City midfield when the Citizens have the ball will also be interesting and maybe the most important aspect of the match. Silva is the maestro for the Citizens and Scott Parker will be charged with closing down on the Spaniard. This will result in Parker being stretched further up and down the pitch than normal, but if he can close down on Silva and minimize his impact, his job will be done.

Of course, the absence of Kompany and possible absence of King make both back lines shaky, but as interesting as things can be in the front and back, it is the midfield that matters most. When the Citizens put the screws to Spurs earlier this season, Parker was not yet with the team. Redknapp and Co. will be hoping that he can make the difference this time around in shutting down Silva. Toss in the absence of Yaya and the midfield battle could flip from where it was in August.

Between the addition of Parker and all those absent, this isn't anything like the match earlier this season, but then again, the two teams' place on the table isn't the same either. In August, City were running their way up the table and Spurs were floundering and now they can move just two points back of the leaders. That's not as much fun as the chance to move joint top, but you can bet they'll take it.

Lineup

No idea if this could work (doubtful), but Defoe and Pav both seem like losing options.

What about Parker, Livermore(Sandro), Modric, vDv, Lennon, and Bale.

It obviously has no forward, but would it be any less likely to score than Defoe or Pav?!? Or maybe I am crazy.

What, by the way, is a false nine?

by johnf34 on Jan 20, 2012 10:44 PM GMT up reply actions

A "false nine"

is essentially a “fake forward” where you have a lone striker up top (the “nine”) that drops deep, often into the midfield, to hold up play. It’s basically a 4-6-0. The idea is to lure a defender up away from the back line which then exposes space in the box that wingers or inside forwards can exploit.

United used this from time to time when Ronaldo was still wearing red. It can be quite effective but it requires a very high level of understanding and teamwork to work well.

The first paragraph you described sounds quite a bit like what I’ve seen Adebayor do. Would you consider him a “false nine?”

by johnf34 on Jan 20, 2012 11:36 PM GMT up reply actions

Not really.

Ade does play deep from time to time, and while he’s not your typical target striker, I’d consider Ade more of a complete forward than a false nine.

Besides, he’s offside waaaaay too often to be considered a midfielder. :-)

Wish Fox wasn't so biased for United

Why are they showing a Manchester United game with some anonymous mid table team nationally when they could be showing a match like this with genuine title implications?

Sandro?

I haven’t heard rumors of Sandro being healthy anywhere? But if he can go, I would think a 4-3-3 with Bale/Defoe/VdV and then Parker and Sandro behind Modric would be the way to go. Then hopefully bring Lennon on at the hour mark for pace and to try and nip a winner. I don’t think Livermore is up for a game of this magnitude yet though, so I’d stick with the normal look with Defoe for Ade without Sandro.

Haven't seen anything saying he's a definite

But supposedly he’s getting back to full fitness and could feature. City’s midfield doesn’t terrify me shorn of Yaya and I think Livermore could do a job. Especially having Scott Parker and Modric both beside him.

So stoked for this. Wish Sandro was fit

The only question is if I can manage to drag my ass to the bar at 530 in the morning or not.

Here's the real question

ManU v Arsenal. Who are you rooting for? ManU loses and we win, we go second. But can you actually bring yourself to cheer for the hated scum?

Yup.

Absolutely no way I root for the Scum. Still plenty of time this season for United to drop points, no need to be hasty. But Arsenal must always be embarrassed and must never get good results.

by Joamiq on Jan 21, 2012 5:17 AM GMT up reply actions

I’ll be secretly pleased if the scum win, because after we win at Eastlands we’ll still be ten points up and right there with ManUre. Mind the gap.

I actually root for the Scum here…very hesitantly.

by Gabe Gonzales on Jan 21, 2012 7:49 AM GMT up reply actions

Boooo

Better dead than red!

Fox Soccer was interviewing some guys at the USMNT camp about who they thought was going to win the ManUre/Scum game. Basically all of them were Scummers (understandably Brek Shea), but then they got to Jurgen and the first thing out of his mouth was “Well as a Tottenham supporter I could never root for Arsenal…”

Once a Spur, always a Spur. What a legend.

Good Record...

We’ll beat them, We have a good record away against city. Believe me they are more worried about us than we are of them, they think we are there bogie side & long may that continue. My cousin owns a pub/restaurant in Manchester & all his mates are City fans & he tells me that they are worried as anything about facing us, I’ll be there tomorrow supporting the boys come what may keep the faith C.O.Y.S

Let's set up

As close to Milan at San Siro as possible. Hinges on Sandro’s fitness obviously, and we might have to sacrifice vdV to the bench, which I’m fine with. Have a weird suspicion ’Arry’s going to pick Pav, which would be … frustrating.

I really worry Arry is going to pick Pav as well. I think the board has been collectively ignoring it and hoping that if nobody recognizes the possibility it doesn’t actually exist. But Arry just really likes subbing like for like, and he may think Pav is the closest to Ade.

I'll probably be roundly mocked for this

but would dempsey be a good striker for us to pick up?

I mean, obviously he’s not the a-lister we really need, but he scores pretty regularly and after all those years at Fulham he might be fine not being at the top of the pecking order (i.e. ok as a sub and second choice starter).

Regardless of this, I’m almost certain that he’d cost more than he’s worth to us, so its probably not worth thinking about too hard.

You definitely shouldn't be mocked for that

As it’s a fair question. I think Dempsey would do well for us, but you’re right the price would be too high. I saw this on twitter this morning, is Clint Dempsey the best player outside of the top 6? Aside from Gerrard, Suarez and possibly Jose Enrique, I’d have to say yes.

I think I might be okay with like 8-10 mil for him. How much do you think Fulham would be looking for? 15+?

by ahowie on Jan 21, 2012 6:20 PM GMT up reply actions

No way

Even if he’s best outside the tope 6. Not good enough.

by ProfByDay on Jan 21, 2012 6:26 PM GMT up reply actions

I love the Deuce.

I’d much rather have him over Pavs, that’s for sure. But yeah, he’s much more valuable to Fulham, so he wouldn’t be worth what he’d have to pay to get him.

Seriously, though.

They’re playing a Cahill less BOLTON. And they’re getting hammered.

I mean, sure, they’re a bit of a mess at the moment, but on paper that’s still a pretty quality side. I just can’t make sense of it.

It's excellent...

… and well deserved. See what happens when Suarez never walks alone? The team falls apart, because they’re playing like they all want to be in the stands with him.
