Tottenham Hotspur Vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers, 2012 Premier League: Well, That Was Lame
Tottenham Hotspur might have believed their own hype a bit. One match after they were universally dubbed as title contenders, they looked nothing like the best version of themselves in a 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers at White Hart Lane. Save for one absolutely brilliant strike by Luka Modric, they simply weren't good enough.
Of course, the officials did not help. They made more bad calls that were to our detriment than bad calls that were to Wolves' detriment, but they were bad all around. That is not to say that the officials cost Tottenham the game -- Spurs simply were not good enough and did not deserve three points -- but the officiating in the game was very poor and it needs to be pointed out. This is not the first poor game that Michael Jones has had this season.
Wolves didn't go forward much and were a bit dirty with their tackling, but they played well. On the couple of occasions where they tried to play football, they did an excellent job of it. Their goal came on a well-taken corner kick and the effort of both Steven Fletcher and Roger Johnson was superb. They kept their defensive shape and knew how to be physical without picking up a red. So, before continuing, it's important to give credit to them. They didn't play the kind of football that I like and the officials were bad, but they executed their gameplan well and deserved a point.
The goal came on a corner that probably wasn't in the 22nd minute, but it's certainly not an excuse. Though the television feed made a point of showing the replay of Kyle Walker not touching the ball over and over again, this is a routine thing that happens in almost every game. Spurs didn't respond well, and their marking on the corner kick was shambolic. Johnson got in-between Younes Kaboul and Michael Dawson for a free header, which he put on target. Luka Modric cleared off the line, but only as far as Fletcher, who finished off the chance.
Both before and after the goal, Spurs had plenty of chances that they squandered. Gareth Bale and Rafael Van der Vaart did their best Roman Pavlyuchenko impressions all game, hitting Row Z repeatedly. Emmanuel Adebayor's shortcomings were perhaps even more infuriating -- he refused to pull the trigger. After a very frustrating first half in which Spurs should have scored two or three times and shouldn't have allowed such an easy set piece goal, they went into the locker room down 1-0.
Shortly into the second half, Luka Modric struck an absolutely brilliant shot from just outside the penalty area, beating Wayne Hennessey and equalizing the match. Unfortunately for Spurs, that would be the last time Hennessey was beaten. He was absolutely brilliant for the remainder of the match, making three big saves between that goal and the end of the match,
The bounces and calls didn't go Spurs' way on Saturday, but that's certainly no excuse for their play. Van der Vaart, Bale, Walker and Adebayor were repeatedly wasteful. Despite his goal and a number of very nice through balls, Modric was not at his best. Dawson and Parker looked off the pace, like they had not yet fully recovered from their injuries and time off.
It's two points dropped that Spurs should have won, but they're right back in the title race with a win over Manchester City next week, regardless of what they do against Wigan on Monday. Believe. COYS.

To clarify to Sabrina, I was using the OG sarcasm font: caps lock. We’re not in a crisis(!). Not even a fake one.
Even Pav can’t be worse than Ade was today!

I was bummed I was going to miss this game
But since I read this and the match thread I’m not so bummed since I probably couldn’t have handled the amount of crap that would have filled the screen from how it sounds we played.

I just realized you guys have a pretty tough run of games coming up
Not great momentum going into it.

officials
actually officials did cost us, Ade was played onside by someone outside the box and there for the goal should have stood, result 2:1 ergo we did do enough, we didd deserve 3 points and wolves did not deserve a point, yes they played well but we played better, I’m sick to death of bad officiating in all games not just ours, 22 shots on goal and only 2 scored is not good enough however, and we clearly need a a striker,
long time spurs fan/first time poster zer0.
by the way this is my favourite spurs blog, most of you guys american?
We played better?

appreciate the welcome,. :) I haven’t been to the lane in years but I used to go in the early nineties I have seen many a shocking terrible performance, I just don’t think that was one of them, 70% possession and 26 goal attempts, is a good team performance, you cant play badly and keep these stats. . .against anyone. finishing was bad all round but we scored two legitimate goals against a team that parked the bus and did enough to snatch the game, I think this was a better game than the West Brom one a few weeks ago, and everyone was praising our spirit for snatching that one, i think we did enough again today and were robbed by officials (again) defence was a little shaky and dawson looked dodgy at times. Ade didn’t impress me today but he hasn’t impressed me for a few weeks. don’t think today was any different, how man city pay him £225.000 a week is beyond me.
Agreed
Yeap, I think they played better than they did in the 2-0 win against Everton in mid-week. The fluidity was there, but indeed, we wasted a hefty amount of chances. Which makes a draw is somewhat a fair result, you gotta take those chances if you wanna get full points.
Aside from that, Adebayor’s performance in terms of dropping deep and moving left and right are not really in a dip, but his touches, give-and-go, and finishes certainly are. I hope the Man. CIty game will give him a break and put him back on form.

please explain how this is playing badly?
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/match/2012/jan/14/tottenham-hotspur-v-wolves#
those are the match stats. for a team that played wednesday that’s not too bad
How many Arsenal games have you seen this year
Where they have 70% possession and 25 shots, but play crap? Like half of them, right?

freekick specialist...
…unless we find one (or buy one), we will not win the title. I cannot recall us scoring any goal from direct freekick this season in the EPL (apart from Pav in Europa). I suspect this is important especially if team decided to park their bus in front of goal. Every top team has one who can consistently score from direct freekick.
Having said that, the performance today is below par. Is it me only? Ade has not been playing too well in the last few games…
Consistently score free kicks?
Never heard of someone like that.

freekick specialist...
To name a few..David Beckham, C Ronaldo, Zola, Maradona, Roberto Carlos, Stuart Pearce, Messi, Zidane, Del Piero ….
A few years back…Giggs, Drogba, Bale…..
Yeah but consistent is the wrong term here

ok...
maybe 7 out of 10 times.
My frustration is that I feel we cannot make anything useful out of the dangerous freekick positions awarded in most games this season.
I used to feel real optimistic whenever Gazza stepped forward to take a few kick or scare to death when Beckham stepped forward against Tottenham.
7/10?
I think you’re being way, way too high with that number. Try 2/10 for the best.

I think that's on Harry not training set pieces
Van der Vaart, Bale and Modric have all shown great quality from dead balls at some point in their careers

10 men
you can’t buy someone just for free kicks, but i do think we should just play them short, same with corners, we are so dangerous from open play at the moment.
agree...
buying was a joke out of frustration. Bale used to be very good from those dead ball situation. At least someone in the team should be training on that.
Uhhh...
What’s VdV on the pitch for? Sure he scores goals from the run of play and is “creative”, but surely his main role is set piece taker. ’Arry loves him some fifa 12.

Question
Did we just not fucking run around today as Arry would have liked?
Try not. Do or Do not. There is no try.- Jedi Master Yoda
VDV...
I don’t understand how he can play brilliant cross field balls on a dime and then consistently take such shit set pieces.
Also would have liked to see Niko get a run out at the end. He looked poor last time out but with Wolves defending so well in the box perhaps he could have done some damage from range.
Oh well, on to the next one. COYS
Rafa hasn't scored from a free kick since South Africa..
Saying that, his hold em play in the box allowed us to score the goal ( Ade did good aswell ) this may be a small consultation but last time we got fourth, wolves did the double on us. Atleast this time we’ve improved lol
I play for the Cucamonga Cracker Killers. You want tickets...

Sorry, but eff that.
Spurs were plenty good enough to win this game. In fact, if the officials were halfway competent, they win this game 2-1 or 1-0. Instead, they blew both the corner kick leading to the bogus Wolves call and then called Ade offside when he was clearly played onside by someone at the far end of the field.
2 really, really awful calls determined the outcome of this game. Let’s not pussy foot around it.
I'm annoyed.
We should have won, not the first time the refs have screwed us – but stuff like that doesn’t last forever. Not like there’s a conspiracy (OR IS THERE?) to undermine us, so we’ll go again and the refs will make some bad decisions for us as well. But yeah between the Stoke debacle and today, not happy with officials right now.
vs Wolves
We are starting to look predictable and there is a definite ‘lack of bite’ in the final third.
It’s down to HR…I think now he has to rotate the squad some.
I was screaming for Defoe at the end of the 1st half.
We need a goal scorer.
An elite striker who has that nose for goal. That player is not loic remy and is not on this team. If we want to make a run for the title, we need to find a guy who can put the ball in the net against these teams that pack it in. How many times today did we have the ball 12 yards out facing goal? Seemed like at least 4 or 5. We often didn’t evenget a shot off. You have to finish those chances.
Are there plans for an Asrenal/Milan Derby Match Thread?
I’ll fanshot one up, but I didn’t want to presume if y’all were planning on doing one already.

Dawson + Heading = Fail
I’m afraid to say, but this is why we need someone like Samba. As an all round footballer, Dawson is better than Samba, but Dawson really can’t head for toffee, and it was his inability to win the ball that cost us the goal. We need Samba against these kinds of minnows.
Also, Harry needs to let Defoe / Pienaar play when the other lads are looking knackered. Pav couldn’t have been worse than Ade today, but only because Ade plays almost every match and must be blown after Christmas. Along with VDV and Bale, some of our players could do with a weekend off.
Damnit Harry!
I told you to rotate the squad for this one, and you didn’t. Look at the results you get from over-stretched players. When is Harry going to start reading my posts and taking them seriously!!! ;)
Too bad about the game. At least it wasn’t a loss. As far as this championship talk goes, I think that everyone should be fully aware that with a loss against City and a CSKA London win, Spurs will only have a 3 point lead over Chelski for 3rd. There is no time for big-headedness when there are still 17 games left in the season.
