The UEFA Champions League draw took place this morning and as many of us feared (or hoped) Tottenham Hotspur have been drawn against Real Madrid. The first leg of the tie will take place at the Bernabeu in Madrid on Tuesday, April 5 with the return leg on Wednesday of the following week. Should Spurs manage to defeat Madrid they would face the winner of the Barcelona and Shakhtar Donetsk tie.
It certainly won't be an easy road for Spurs. Real Madrid are, obviously, one of the best teams in the world and Jose Mourinho will be well prepared for Tottenham. That's not to say that Real aren't vulnerable. As we all know, Madrid are nearly unbeatable at home, but Lyon held them to a draw in the first leg of the Champions League tie, so anything is possible.
This draw is exciting in that Spurs will, again, get to test their mettle against one of the best sides in Europe. However, if any of us still held any delusions of winning the Champions League, which, given our recent league form, seems to be the only path back to the Champions League next season, those will have gone right out the window. The prospect of facing both Real Madrid and Barcelona just to make it into the final to face perhaps Manchester United seems to be a daunting task.
Despite the enormity of the task put before Spurs I cannot wait to see Spurs play at the Bernabeu and to see the return leg at White Hart Lane. This is going to be an exciting time. Hopefully, Tottenham can combine this with a good run in the league and make this a truly exciting spring.
