Tottenham Hotspur visited their Premier League rivals Sunderland in Saturday’s evening kick-off at the Stadium of Light.

Tottenham allowed the hosts to open the scoring, but in a most unorthodox way. Whilst William Gallas was changing his football boots on the sideline, Sunderland promptly took the lead in the 11th minute through their Ghanaian striker, Asamoah Gyan. He controlled a low driven cross with his left foot and proceeded to sweep home with his right foot in one swivel. Gyan has silenced his doubters and gained many more fans since his move to Sunderland. His latest neat goal and celebration have done him no harm.

Before the interval, however, Michael Dawson headed his side back into the game in the 44th minute straight from a well taken corner. The stand-in Tottenham captain was fortunate in that that his header went straight through Craig Gordon’s legs.

Soon after the second half began, Niko Kranjcar volleyed his side ahead in the 57th minute. The impressive Sandro broke forward and lofted the ball into the penalty area. The ball deflected into the path of Kranjcar, who then proceeded to volley the lofted ball into the Sunderland net and send the away support into delirium.

The referee called time on a fractious game with the visitors Tottenham picking up all three points.

Tottenham will now focus their attention on their upcoming UEFA Champions League match with AC Milan, whilst Sunderland will re-focus their efforts on regaining 6th place in the English Premier League.
